Congratulations to the Grade 4–6 students on completing their clay unit! It was a huge amount of work, but the results are truly outstanding—there are many budding ceramicists at RGLPS.

Prep

The Prep students worked with magic clay to sculpt a bird attached to a wind-up mechanism. There was a wonderful balance of excitement and focus as students drew inspiration from illustrations, photographs, and each other’s work. They carefully considered movement, ensuring their birds travelled in the desired direction, while also incorporating key features of a bird into their designs.

I continue to be amazed by the creativity and imagination these budding artists bring to their work.

Grade 1/2

This week, the Grade 1/2 students explored slab-building techniques in clay. They rolled out a flat slab, used a stencil to cut a shape, and then added detail with an etching tool. Their pieces will dry over the holidays before being fired in Term 4.

Grade 3

The Grade 3 students took inspiration from Flower Market by CJ Hendry—an immersive large-scale installation featuring 100,000 hand-made plush flowers, which first appeared in New York City in 2024 and returned in 2025. With each flower stem priced at $5, making her art accessible for many to buy.

Students created their own miniature flower markets using pipe cleaners. While guided by step-by-step tutorials, they were also encouraged to experiment freely and make creative choices. 

Grade 4

After constructing the armature for their sound suits, Grade 4 students moved on to selecting materials to cover their figures. They were encouraged to think critically about their choices, considering both the meaning behind the materials and the overall effect on their design.

Grade 5/6

This week, the Grade 5/6 students were inspired by CJ Hendry’s exhibition Keff Joons. Anchored by a large interactive sculpture of 50 balloon knots—designed for visitors to climb and play—the exhibition also features Hendry’s hyper-realistic knot drawings and 1,000 lenticular artworks.

In response, students worked collaboratively to twist and knot long balloons, creating playful, tangled forms. These works, scattered around the school, are ephemeral (lasting only for a short time).

Special mention goes to 5B who worked as a class to create the largest knot of them all!

A message from Sadie (Art Captain)

Zdravo (hello) from Croatia!

This term I have had the privilege to explore Europe with my family. Europe has been the best place to see lots of artwork, especially France! We visited many museums and art galleries. 

In one of the art galleries we got the special opportunity to see art pieces by Claude Monet and Vincent Van Gough. We were very lucky to get a photo with the artwork, because the paintings were surrounded by many visitors. Also, during our stay in France we visited the Balloon Museum, it had lots of interactive balloon themed art pieces which were very interesting. I had never seen anything like it before, which made it very enjoyable! 

I can’t wait to see all the artwork everyone has created while I have been away. I am also excited to rejoin art club in the last week of term 3.

We are always on the hunt for volunteers in the Art Room. It is a room that accumulates a lot of mess and disorganization. The main tasks are tidying and organising.
