Term 3 Week 6

#magnifysandhurst

It has been a busy fortnight in the P-2 area with lots of wonderful learning happening.

Foundation

Grade Prep children are learning new sound-symbol relationships this week with a focus on short vowel sounds, the /y/ sound (as in yellow) and the /x/ sound. The children are continuing to build up their bank of tricky words for reading and spelling. They are enjoying the story, “Gorilla” and are using the story to make predictions, learn about parts of a narrative (beginning, middle and end) and are also summarising the story at the end. During the story they are broadening their vocab by discovering the meaning of the words ‘tingling,’ ‘gently’ and ‘thrilled.’

Gr 1

Grade One children are learning the /ar/ and /or/ /ore/ sounds. They are learning how to spell some new tricky words: ‘house,’ ‘because’ and ‘why.’ They are enjoying the story book, “Today We Have No Plans.”

Gr 2

Grade Two children have completed their latest spelling assessment. They have corrected any spelling errors by identifying the tricky spelling patterns and focusing on learning these parts correctly. They are absolutely loving the story book, ‘Zoo’ by Anthony Browne. This is our second story by Anthony Browne, and we highly recommend it to you. The illustrations are fabulous and the whole story lends itself to many questions being asked about the animals on display and zoos in general. The children have enjoyed sharing their opinions about this text.

Following the OCHRE program for Mathematics, Grade Preps are learning how to share items into equal groups.

Gr 1

In Maths, Grade Ones are learning that Quantities can be shared into equal groups and grouped into amounts that facilitate efficient counting and calculations.

Gr 2

In Maths, the Grade Twos have been learning about sharing and grouping, repeated addition (including skip counting), how to represent groups in arrays and they’ve been solving worded problems.

Gr 3 and 4

Work on the novel 'The Iron Man' has now concluded and we will watch the movie based on this story to compare the two. We finished off our writing with how to plan and write a concluding paragraph. We reviewed prefixes such as misunderstood, undiagnosed, disarm and rebuild. We also briefly revised suffixes -s and -ing. This week we began reading the classic 'Charlotte's Web' by E.B. White. Our vocabulary work is taken from this novel. We are looking at expanding/combining simple sentences to form a complex sentence using a subordinating conjunction. Students have learned about how and why we use pronouns also. We are continuing work on our joined handwriting with a focus on diagonal and horizontal joins.

In Maths, we have begun our extension unit on Addition and Subtraction. We are representing addition and subtraction problems with bar models. Adding and subtracting using compensation and using fact families for addition.

Gr 5 and 6

In 5/6 this week, we have started our new novel - "The Grandest Bookshop in the World" by Amelia Mellor. This story is a children's fantasy novel by set in 1893 in Melbourne at the famous Cole’s Book Arcade.

Siblings Pearl and Vally Cole discover their father has made a magical deal with the enigmatic Obscurosmith that endangers the Arcade and their family. To save them, the children must overcome seven dangerous challenges by midnight, or they will forget their father and the Arcade ever existed.

During writing time, we are focusing on narrative writing. This week, we are focusing on the structure of a narrative, and looking at examples of narrative pieces of writing.

In Maths, we are into our second week of 'Decimals'. We have been focusing on multiplying & dividing decimals by powers of 10, place value of decimals and rounding decimals. Next week, we will move on to 'Time'.
