School Wide Positive Behaviour Support

The Impact of SWPBS

Positive Change We Can All See

Since introducing SWPBS, we’ve already noticed changes that are making our school an even better place to learn and play.

Across many schools in Victoria, SWPBS has been shown to:

  • Help students feel more connected and included

  • Improve classroom behaviour and focus

  • Build teacher confidence in supporting positive behaviour

We’re seeing these shifts here too. Students are talking about our expectations, encouraging each other to meet them, and proudly earning tokens. We’ve noticed calmer classrooms, happier playgrounds, and a stronger sense of pride in our school. Families are also part of this positive change and your support in reinforcing our expectations makes a real difference.

Wellbeing and Learning

Behaviour and academics are two sides of the same coin, each influencing the other in powerful ways.

(George Sugai & Rob Horner, 2009)

Teachers know that a student’s ability to engage with learning is often shaped by their behaviour, while academic difficulties can lead to behavioural challenges. This is where SWPBS plays a critical role by providing a structured framework that promotes positive behaviour through clear expectations, consistent routines, and proactive support.

By creating a safe and predictable environment, SWPBS helps reduce behavioural issues that interfere with learning, while also fostering the social-emotional skills students need to succeed academically. Understanding and leveraging this connection allows schools to support the whole child, improving both behaviour and academic outcomes together.

Working Together

Research shows that when schools consistently use SWPBS, students develop stronger connections, greater respect for others, and increased confidence in their learning. Teachers also benefit from clear, shared approaches that make classrooms calmer and more focused.

One simple way families can support this at home is by talking with your child about our school expectations matrix. Discussing what these expectations look like in everyday situations, both at school and at home, helps children see the consistency and importance of these values.

We’re only at the beginning of our SWPBS journey, and the progress so far has been very encouraging. As our students move through their years of schooling, SWPBS will continue to take a stronger hold, building the foundations for a safe, supportive, and positive learning environment for everyone.

✨ Together, we’re creating a school culture where kindness, respect, and learning can thrive.

Many thanks,
