STEM

Over the last term and a half, a group of ten students from Buninyong Primary School participated in the GALS (Girls as leaders in STEM) STEM Program. The program is designed to inspire and empower young women to explore and pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Through hands-on experiences, industry partnerships, and collaborative projects, the program aims to build confidence, foster creativity, and provide real-world insights into STEM fields.
The program was run by the Ballarat Tech School and Deakin University as well as industry leaders. Throughout the program students were required to work on an issue that is affecting the environment. These issues included food production, water efficiency and the amount of toys and clothing ending up in landfill. In groups students were required to ideate, research and design a sustainable solution for their problem. As a part of this process the girls went on multiple excursions to the Ballarat Tech School where they learnt valuable skills including, but not limited to how to use a laser cutter, computer software, problem solving and communication strategies. To conclude their research students created a poster and a prototype. These items were displayed at a showcase night at the Ballarat tech School. The students' work is on display at Federation University. Please go and have a look!
