KLA Feature - Mathematics

Mathematics came alive this term as students left their classrooms and headed outdoors for hands-on exploration. Armed with measuring tapes and string, Year 8 set out to investigate one of the most famous mathematical constants: π (pi).  By comparing their results, students soon noticed a fascinating pattern — no matter the size of the circle, the ratio of circumference to diameter was always close to 3.14. “This was a great way to see maths in action,” said one student. “I never realised that pi was hidden in things all around us.”

Year 9 also stepped outside the classroom and into the real world of trigonometry! They used clinometers to measure the angles of elevation of various buildings and structures around the school. These activities not only reinforced key concepts and skills but also highlighted the joy of learning mathematics through discovery. By working collaboratively, students were able to connect abstract concepts with the real world, turning a simple measurement task into a moment of genuine mathematical wonder.

Our Year 12 students are entering the final stage of their high school journey as they prepare for the HSC examinations. Their focus has shifted to revision, exam preparation, and strengthening recall through retrieval practice strategies. This approach helps students consolidate knowledge across two years of study, while also building confidence in applying concepts under timed conditions. Teachers and peers alike are supporting each other through these demanding weeks, with the shared goal of achieving personal bests. The Mathematics faculty extends its warmest wishes to all Year 12 students as they approach this important milestone in their education.
