Teaching and Learning

Year 9, 10 and 11 Exams
You would be aware as we move towards the end of semester, assessments take place to get an understanding of student learning. This is no more apparent than in Years 9, 10 and 11 as students will be undertaking their exams towards the end of the term. Further information will be distributed directly to students and families, however there are key points to be reinforced.
These points may well prompt discussion at home, which would be great, however they may also lead to action for students and/or their families.
- Exams at this stage are a learning experience. Whilst they are certainly for assessment, learning from the exam experience is equally as important. Identify what can be done to improve for Semester 2 exams.
- Exam preparation cannot start too early. Regular review is essential if students are to perform at their best.
- The exams put students under pressure. Nevertheless, if they are causing distress, you can - and should - do something about it. Let us know at the school and we can help; our Wellbeing Services of the College can certainly assist.
- Students should have a clear understanding what is being assessed in the exam. This will be provided by the teacher and if there are any doubts, clarify directly with the teacher.
- Prioritise health during the exams. Eating well, getting plenty of sleep and managing time will assist students in performing at their best.
- The exams are important, however don’t let them become bigger than they should be. If mistakes are made or the result is disappointing, it’s not the end of the world as there is always next time. Making mistakes is a very powerful way to learn.
We are here to prepare students and support families so that those facing exams do the best that they possibly can. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Careers and Subject Selection Process
The Careers Program at St Bede’s College is in full swing with our College Careers Centre with Ms Kaylene Menara and Ms Jen Willian leading a number of events currently. As well as being available for students of all year levels to book in a Careers Centre Appointment, there are a number of other opportunities that occur in preparation for our subject selection process in Term 3.
At the end of Term 1, our Year 10 students undertook their Morrisby Testing, which was followed up this term with an interview to discuss the results. This test provides a profile for each student that gives some direction based on what their interest and abilities are. Just last week in support of this, every Year 10 student made their way into the city for the annual Careers Expo at the Exhibition Centre. The day provides a showcase of information, from tertiary education providers to potential careers, and students have the opportunity to explore as they see fit.
Next week, our Year 9 students will take part in their annual careers week, which also endeavours to give them hands on experience in entrepreneurship and enterprise as well as providing information on potential careers, future pathways and the world of work. All Year 9 students will be at the Mentone Campus for the three days and we are confident that students will find it both highly engaging and informative.
As indicated, in Term 3 students will be undertaking their subject selections. As a College, we are committed to ensuring that they are as well informed as they can be so that the decisions they make are taking them to where they want to go. For our Year 9 and 10 students, the range of activities on offer provides an ideal opportunity for parents and carers to engage in conversation around what the future might look like for your child.
We will provide ongoing information to students and families, so a conversation that commences at this time will only get richer as time goes on. We look forward to supporting all students in their chosen pathway and should there be any questions or concerns, be assured that we are here to support families.
