Which leader do you follow??
I followed my brother-in-law when we went on a hike last week – because he had the map. Some of you might follow an ALF team, national cricket team, or you might follow an influencer or game on You Tube Kids, or as a parent maybe a Pinterest or Instagram person.
If you follow someone or something – we often want to imitate and copy them. Maybe you learn the team song. We want to be as good as someone on that team, have what they want and act like they act.
This week's Bible verse is from Matthew 4:18 – 22. As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him. Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
Simon, Andrew, James and John would have heard other teachers preach and especially heard John the Baptist, they may have even seen Jesus baptised. So, it is likely that they had known a little bit about Jesus. They wanted to learn from him, be like him.
Jesus calls us to follow him – each day – and I know it is something that I want to do! Unlike the disciples who had a little bit of knowledge when they followed Jesus, we have the whole Bible to help me know who Jesus is and what he did for me.
I know I want to follow Jesus because he is God’s son, he died and rose for me so that I can have a relationship with God and eternal life. I know that I want to follow Jesus because he is loving, forgiving, generous, kind and wise. These are the things that I want to be in my life … this is who I want to imitate, this is who I want to follow.
Jesus called the disciples then and he calls us now – in Revelation 3:20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.
I want to follow and be like Jesus – I pray you do to!
