Year 1/2

Maths
In Numeracy we have been exploring the concept of Place Value. Students have been learning that the position of a digit in a number determines its value, focusing on ones, tens and hundreds (e.g. the 3 in 310 represents 3 hundreds). To gain a deeper understanding of this concept, a variety of hands-on materials have been utilised, including MAB, unifix, counters and bundling sticks.
A much-loved activity last week was our ‘Place Value Scavenger Hunt’ where students found posters around the school, counted the collection of MAB and matched it to the corresponding sea creature on their game card. The students have thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with each other during this unit, and it’s really wonderful to see how much they learn from each other!
Literacy
Within literacy students have finished their recount writing unit. Students learnt how to use time connectives in their writing, write in chronological order and in the first person. Students practiced these skills within multiple recount writing opportunities. Students wrote about a funny memory story, a story about a favourite toy, and also experiences at school.
Students are now within an introduction to narratives unit. Students are learning about the structure of narratives, how to create strong characters, setting, problems and solutions. Next week students will be working on a narrative for the whole week, using the writing cycle of drafting, editing and publishing.
Within syntax, students have been learning about verbs, nouns and adjectives. This is to support students sentence structure and expand their vocabulary.
Sounds Write
Over the past few weeks in Sounds Write, the Grade 1s have been exploring the /oe/ and the /er/ sounds and how one sound can have many different spellings. The Grade 2s have been exploring the /oy/ and the /ar/ sound, experimenting with multi syllable words and putting them into sentences.
Over the school holidays we encourage all students to continue to practise their reading skills through the use of their Reading Satchels which contain Sounds Write activities, spelling words, decodable readers and fluency practise.
If you have any questions regarding the Reading Satchels please don't hesitate to reach out to your classroom teacher.
Humanities
Last week was Harmony Week, a special week to celebrate diversity and inclusion in Australia. Our students learnt about the importance of Harmony Week and why it is celebrated across the country. Students participated in multiple activities across the week that helped deepen their understanding of diversity and inclusion - as well as broadening their vocabulary around this topic.
Thank you for a wonderful first term. We look forward to seeing everyone back in Term 2 feeling refreshed and ready to learn!
