At Moriac Primary School, we are proud to implement the Berry Street Education Model (BSEM), a trauma-informed approach designed to support the social, emotional, and academic development of our students. This model provides strategies and tools to create a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment where all students can thrive.
One effective strategy we use to support regulation is brain breaks.
Brain breaks are short, intentional breaks taken during the school day to allow students to step away from their work, reset, and regulate their emotions. These breaks, typically lasting around 3-5 minutes, can include activities like stretching, deep breathing, or simple movement exercises.
As part of our wellbeing program, we use EiPulse, an online tool that supports our students' emotional and behavioural regulation. EiPulse is an easy-to-use system that allows students to self-assess their emotional state and provide real-time feedback on how they are feeling throughout the school day.
Here’s how EiPulse works and how we use it:
Emotional Check-Ins: Students log into EiPulse and complete a brief self-assessment, indicating how they are feeling emotionally.
Tracking Emotional Patterns: Over time, EiPulse tracks students' emotional responses, allowing teachers to notice patterns or trends in their behaviour.
Individualised Support: Based on the data from EiPulse, our staff can tailor support strategies to individual students. .
Encouraging Emotional Awareness: EiPulse encourages students to recognise and understand their emotions, helping them develop important emotional intelligence skills.
Promoting Gratitude: EiPulse promote students sharing gratitude with other students and staff. By incorporating gratitude into their daily routine, students develop important life skills in emotional regulation, positivity, and mindfulness.
By using this tool, we can better understand and respond to each student's individual needs, promoting a supportive learning atmosphere.
