Term 1 has been a jam-packed start to 2025 for our school library!
Kicking off the year with welcoming our new Year 7’s is always a highlight. This year’s cohort have brought with them so much passion and energy. As part of our introduction to the library program, I have the pleasure of introducing myself to each class. It was great to see so many students excited to start borrowing from the library and chatting to each other about books. Many of our year 7s have showed interest in Manga, Fantasy and Horror and have been instrumental in filling our library with student chosen titles. We are proud to have added over 40 new books to our collection already this year.
Our first big celebration of the year was Valentines Day. We paired students with their perfect book matches through our genrefied displays and hosted paper flower making in the library on the 14th of February. So many students from Year 7 through to 12 came by to make flowers for friends, family and loved ones. We hope to host many more crafting events throughout the year.
In week 8, students from the SRC chose to celebrate Harmony Week and International day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD). They organised posters with the help of our wellbeing team and worked with our principal team to deliver a multicultural colouring activity in the library on the 21st. It was fantastic to see so many students from different year levels sharing stories and facts about their different cultures.
We also started what I think will be the first of many bookmark competitions. With so many creative students in our library every day we plan on celebrating their talents with a yearly bookmark competition, with our winner, Evelyn Downey, receiving an art prize pack and having their bookmark design distributed to students throughout the year.
This year the library will also be introducing Library Leaders. Students can collect application forms from the library desk if they wish to apply. Duties will include borrowing, returns, tidying shelves and assisting with displays and activities. This is a great opportunity for those who aspire to join leadership in the college, or those who have a passion for reading. Applications open semester 1.
I encourage all students to come by the library and take part in the fun and activities provided.
