Grade 6 students immersing themselves in the history and culture of Melbourne on their urban development walking tour excursion

 Prep

Grade 1 and 2 have had some visits to school from very important people in our community - this supports their inquiry learning for term one, focussed on our local community and celebrations.

Alice (Grade2) "Today an ambulance came to school. The grade 1s asked questions. The paramedic showed us the inside of the ambulance. It was pretty small. There are special seats inside that I got to see. The number I need to call if there is an emergency is 000. There were also some sticky pads that go on a person to check your heartbeat."

E "Today's incursion was interesting because you got to go inside the ambulance. Some people got to stand up the front and got to have sticky things on their hands and Harry got a tight thing on his arm to check his blood pressure. The ambulance was more narrow than I expected. If I could ask more questions I would like to ask how fast the ambulance could go."

Sia "One Friday We went to the Melbourne International Flower show and we walked around and looked at all the landscapes. There was a big building and inside there were all of these flowers. One part was the bloom room and it was dark as you walked in and then as you entered the flowers lit up and glowed. It made me feel uplifted. There was also a section that had dresses made out of flowers."

Amy "We were in different groups and we looked at all the scarecrows that schools had created and we found out if we had won or not. Even though we didn't win we are excited that the scarecrow will be in our kitchen garden. I liked how we got to see all the really nice displays. My favourite thing was the ballgown that Belle wore in Beauty and the Beast, made out of golden flowers. "

Pola (4R) "We have been writing stories, with a focus on building suspense and tension. My story is about 3 girls who are lost in the woods during a school camp. First they discover they've been left behind, then they realise they don't have their food, water or bags and then it gets dark ..."

Elke (4R) " We have been doing problem solving every Friday in maths. Every week we get a problem and we use multiple methods to work out a solution. It connects many ideas in maths like division, subtraction, multiplication, fractions. One example is a recipe and we had to double the quantities in fractions. Sometimes we take different roles and help each other. "

Grades 5 and 6

Our Grade 5 and 6 students spent the day exploring the CBD, learning about the geography of the city and how it was used by both indigenous people and European settlers. The development of the city throughout history and the changing demographics of the population were explored. Students engaged with questions of identity, the built environment and the impact of development on the natural landscape.

Aydin and Isabella "Last week on Thursday we left school, we walked to Brighton Beach station, got on the train and then we got off at Flinders street and went over to Fed Square. After eating our recess the tour guide arrived and you were given some identities of real historical people. We rubbed some eucalyptus leaves together to smell what Australia smells like, and we also tasted a honey drop, which was a plant with sweet honey that the indigenous people ate. One of the identities we talked about was Ned Kelly's sister, one was John Batman.  We also walked down the Yarra River and we went to Sandridge bridge and talked about the different nationalities that have made Australia home. We then stopped at the Red Stair Amphitheatre across the river at southbank, which is where there used to be a waterfall. "

Stop the press - these photos just in from our reporters at the grade 5 campgrounds. It looks like they are having a brilliant time

STEM Day activities

Prep: Using pegs, rulers, blocks, icecream sticks, lego, rubber bands and clips our prep students used their ingenuity to construct bridges, which they then drew and labeled. Teamwork was the key to success in this activity and we are pleased to report that all of our teams created structurally sound (and even decorative) bridges!

Grade 1 and 2 students put their engineering brains to good use to help save Humpty Dumpty from serious injury. Poor Humpty kept falling off his wall, so Grade 1 designed and created strong walls out of blocks and pipe cleaners. "We can't wait to do it again" say Noah and Leo!

They also got to explore basic coding through the use of B-Bots and took on the challenge of getting through the obsticle course - practising directional language and setting simple coding instructions.

Grades 3 and 4 participated in a range of STEM rotations, the Marble Run was a hit - "but hard, we had to keep testing out our marble run game to see if it works" Sofia; Microbit coding "I managed to get mine to show maths symbols" Macy; and aerodynamics, making rockets and testing and measuring launches "was epic!".

Grades 5 and 6 enjoyed the opportunity to create animations through coding program Scatch; used Microbits to program light and sound; and built straw structures in a competition for the tallest tower, with the least resources.

What a fantastic day of learning!

Interschool sports success

Congratulations to our senior students who have been extremely successful in their inter-school sports competitions. In particular we want to highlight the Oz-tag and T-Ball teams who closed the season with a series of wins (and potentially have clinched the top spot for these sports in the seaside sport area).
