Public Speaking

Public speaking is a task that many students often approach with trepidation, however, it is something we do in our every day lives without realising. Each and every interaction we have results in a moment of impromptu speaking.
Last weekend, Pip Mecham and Phoebe Baker both prepared speeches to compete in the Rostrum Voice of Youth, a national student development program which provides an excellent opportunity for secondary school students to gain experience and confidence in expressing their views and communicating a message.
Pip spoke on the topic of stepping stones, using both humour and passion to deliver her message to a group of her peers and their parents, whilst Phoebe spoke in the senior division about a time for reflection. Included in the presentation a range of metaphors, personal examples, and speaking with feelings, both students delivered engaging and insightful speeches, showing tremendous growth over the last 12 months. In addition to their prepared speeches, both students were required to deliver impromptu speeches on the spot. They had 15 minutes to respond to a topic, decide how they will deliver their speech and develop their notes.
Again, both Phoebe and Pip were engaging, and vivacious storytellers and we give our congratulations to them. Further congratulations to Phoebe Baker, who won the senior division and is now headed to the state finals later this year. There are many speaking events that College participates in over the school year, and I personally encourage all students to take advantage of these opportunities. These events not only allow students to improve their public speaking but also help them develop critical thinking, creativity, and confidence.
