Outdoor Education
On Wednesday 26 March, the Year 7 Outdoor Education class climbed Mount Abrupt.
The hike at the base of the mountain, from the bus we navigated our way to the trail and started to hike. After a few one hundred metres we stopped at the bottom of a gully and Mr Bell told us to keep our eye out when we were walking up a spur (where one way is going up and every other side is going down.)
With the boys leading the way, and compass and map in hand we made our way up the mountain, stopping occasionally to let the people at the back catch up. Every turn we made, I took a new bearing by aligning the compass with which way we wanted to go on the map and aligning the north and south to the northings on the map. We had about five small stops on the way up before ending the hike at Mud-Dadjug campsite, gazing upon the amazing view and pointing out where we started. Looking out from the platform, we saw knolls (small hills) and gullies, including the one we had walked through earlier.
On the way down we made quick time, only making one brief stop to let others catch up, and we were back on the bus at 1:00pm.
From here, we drove to a campsite (Djardji-djawara campsite) where we ate lunch and tried to pitch a tent on some of the platforms. Only some of us succeeded! After about half an hour we packed up the tents and started the short walk back to the road where we loaded ourselves onto the bus and made our way back to the school just in time for the bell, concluding a great day out!
