Adolescence

I wanted to take a moment to highlight a new Netflix phenomenon that has been sparking important conversations—Adolescence. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend taking the time to watch. While I warn you, it’s certainly not easy viewing at times, the series offers a compelling and thought-provoking exploration of adolescence, social media, and, in particular, the stories that young men consume.

The themes in Adolescence align closely with many of the challenges we see young people navigating today, making it a valuable watch for parents, educators, and students alike. To provide more insight, here’s just one of the many articles written about the show by Toolbox Education:

What Netflix’s Adolescence Shows About Mental Health & Growing Up

Adolescence is more than just another teen drama—it’s a deep dive into the mental health struggles young people face today.

Anxiety, self-doubt, unhealthy coping mechanisms—it’s all there. But what stands out is how some characters learn to navigate these challenges while others spiral.

A few key takeaways through a psychology lens:

1️. Thoughts Shape Emotions – Adolescence highlights how negative self-talk fuels anxiety and low self-esteem. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) teaches that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are connected—helping young people recognize and reframe unhelpful thinking patterns can make a huge difference.

2️. Coping Strategies Matter – Some characters find healthy ways to manage stress, like journaling or seeking support, while others turn to avoidance or self-destructive behaviors. Therapy and psychology-based programs focus on on equipping teens with tools to regulate emotions and build resilience.

3️. Connection Is Everything – The show reinforces a core truth in mental health: we heal in relationships, not isolation. Whether it’s a trusted teacher, a therapist, or a good friend, having a support system can change the trajectory of someone’s mental well-being.

Adolescence is a powerful reminder of the importance of early intervention and mental health education.
