Principal's Message

At Wembley Primary School, we acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which our school sits, the Woi-wurrung and Boonwurrung people of the South-Eastern Kulin Nation.
We celebrate and respect the oldest continuing culture and recognise the importance of education in truth telling, equity and justice.
We pay our respects to Elders past and present and recognise and value the learning that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, colleagues and community bring into our schools.
Week 7-8 Update
We finish this fortnight celebrating two very important themes:
- Everyone Belongs - Harmony Week
- Celebrating Different Minds - Neurodiversity Celebration Week
Our Diversity and Inclusion Captains spent some of their lunchtimes collecting data from our student cohort about: cultural background, whether they were born in Australia or not, and whether they follow a religion or speak a language other than English at home. This raw data was then shared with classes to be used as part of their core lessons - most commonly, maths, however students also investigated different cultural celebrations as well as spending time sharing personal stories.
This Friday, as a final celebration, students and staff are encouraged to wear a 'Touch of Orange' and our Junior Choir will sing the song, 'Together' at Assembly.
Occurring at the same time has been Neurodiversity Celebration Week; I spent time with our Diversity and Inclusion Captains last Friday, as they interviewed a number of people about the importance of celebrating our differences, and what inclusion means to them. Students have been exploring the idea of celebrating our unique strengths and differences. Interested in finding out more? Below is the official Primary School's Powerpoint Presentation:
Onwards and Upwards Psychology also developed a special Presentation specifically for Neurodiversity Celebration Week:
It's also been a sports-themed couple of weeks, with 12 of our students participating in the District Swimming Competition, held at Oak Park Sports and Aquatic Centre. See our student celebrations page for full details and results 🏆. This week we also had several Western Bulldogs players out to visit our Year 3 students. Matthew Kennedy, Rory Lobb and Bailey Dale all engaged our students in heroic footy tales, and hosted an engaging Q&A.
Finally, this fortnight the school launched a new 'Borrow and Play' system for our students, in order to maximise positive engagement during playtimes - thanks to Simon Zammit's idea! The process is led by our Year 6 captains, and students are able to borrow from a long list of additional equipment, including: volleyballs, velcro throw & catch mitts, skipping ropes and spike ball equipment. So far we've had a total of 370 borrows since we launched, averaging 80 borrows a day!
Congratulations to all of our Year 3 and Year 5 students who completed their NAPLAN assessments this fortnight - we had a succesful testing period, with all students giving the tests their best go. I'd like to thank Renee Johnson and Kristen Kosowski in particular, for their oversight of the process.
We've continued to impress upon our students the importance of displaying safe behaviours in and around the classroom, yard, and of course, toilets. Students have been responsive to an associated House points system, with a dramatic improvement in the overall cleanliness of our toilets and behaviours in and around the space. We have also engaged our Department contractors in a deep clean of the canteen urinals, which we hope will improve students' comfort when using the facility.
We look forward to a successful and fun final fortnight - thank you to all parents for your encouragement and support thus far in our opening term.

General Reminders
Lost Property: Our wonderful parent helpers have begun to organise our lost property - housed in the hallway of the new building. There are two sections: Lost Property and Pre-Loved clothing. Pre-Loved is accessible to all, and parents and families are invited to take what they need from this cupboard. Unfortunately we are still waiting on IKEA to deliver a few final components to the cupboards, so they are not entirely finished, but hope to be soon.
Label clothing: just a reminder that we find it incredibly helpful when clothing is labelled with a student's full name and grade. This helps us return items direct to a classroom, and skip the Lost Property stage!
Cross Country: Year 3 - 6, next Wednesday. Information will be sent out to families on Friday 21 March via Sentral email.
Easter Raffle: see the WPA information on our Community Noticeboard re: brining in donations for the Easter Raffle - all proceeds will be going towards sun shade for the yard, as well as completing our perimeter high fencing.
Student Entry Point: A reminder to all that general student access to the new building should not be through the office entrance. We ask that students enter school grounds via the side and rear door entry points, preserving front access for those that are specifically visiting the office or sick bay.
Term 1 Holidays: Our final day of Term 1 will be Friday 4 April with a dismissal time of 2:30pm. We will be holding a slightly longer assembly, in order to accomodate our Easter Raffle; we will share detailed information with families about this closer to the date. The canteen will remain operational for lunch orders on this day.
