Coaching Success in 2024

Congratulations to James Sherman (SVC 2002–2005) on the success he is having as senior coach with the Glenorchy Knights Football (Soccer) Club. His team won this year’s Lakoseljac Cup—the statewide knockout cup—and, as a consequence, qualified to represent Tasmania in the Australia Cup (the national premier knockout competition). The Knights travelled to Sydney for the Round 1 encounter with North-West Sydney where, despite proving very competitive, they suffered a 3-0 loss.

Further to this, at the moment, the Knights sit near the top of the Tasmania division of the NPL (National Premier League). With only a couple of rounds to go (and no finals), the Knights could well have more silverware to add to their trophy cabinet.

After graduating Year 10 at St Virgil's College, James finished his studies while living in Melbourne. He gained Australian representation by being included in a U18 schoolboys team that toured Samoa and New Zealand.

He played semi-professional football in Melbourne and the UK for ten years. He recently gained his A license coaching qualification—the second highest in Asia—and has a small start-up business, a sports label called "MYELIN ATHLETIC," which specialises in sublimation-printed kits for a range of sports and polos. It also provides high-quality apparel for sale to clubs.

James has been the coach of the Knights for the past six seasons, as well as having coaching duties with Tasmanian U15 and U16 boys’ teams. James will finish his tenure with the Knights at the end of the season and will pursue his coaching career on the mainland or possibly beyond. It will be of interest to note what evolves—the best wishes of the Association go with him.
