A Film Review By John Paul Panackal
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, is a truly exceptional film that explores everyday themes from our lives, and has an outstanding animation style ahead of its time.
While being part of a very old franchise, this film far exceeds the expectations that many held for it.
The movie takes a new twist to the classic Spider-Man series, with a new character who only die-hard fans would know. This film is about Miles Morales, an Afro-Latino Spider-Man, and the first movie screen Spider-Man of colour.
The movie begins with Miles Morales starting at a new boarding school he just joined. Following the normal Spider-Man plot, he’s bitten by a radioactive spider which gives him superpowers. Unlike normal Spider-Man though, he meets another Spider-Man who is sadly killed by the story’s antagonist Kingpin. Then, he finds himself amid more ‘spider-people’ who were transported there from another dimension.
One amazing feature of the film is how each of the ‘spider-people’ has a different animation style to embody their home universe (e.g. Peni Parker = Anime style universe).
Themes are another aspect of the film which the movie shows amazingly, using the contrast between the hero and villain to establish that grief can affect everyone differently, and how bringing more ‘spider-people’ to show how “...we are stronger together…” (Nikki Martyn, n.d). Miles embodies this when he says:
“When I feel alone, like no one understands what I'm going through, I remember my friends who get it.”
Overall, this film is amazing and fun for the whole family and all ages.
