Year 8 Student Managers’ Report
The anticipated events of the Year 8 City Camp have now been completed successfully with the final House; Stirling having been on camp this week. Overwhelmingly, the students all enjoyed their experience, even though “they had to walk a lot.” We hope that this experience has enriched their understanding of Melbourne’s history and evolution as a modern city. You can read Sherlock’s account of the Hotham Camp below. The program was mirrored for each camp.

The Year 8 students recently participated in the city school camp. We started with getting to Mitcham Station at 9:35 am and we headed for Southern Cross Station and arrive at CYC by 11:00 am. Once we got there, we were sorted into groups to participate in a bike tour, fashion tour, Street Art (graffiti) tour and multicultural tour. Every activity offered a different insight and interesting approach to learning. In the afternoon, we visited the State Library of Victoria which was followed by free time in Melbourne Central Shopping Centre.
The day ended with a two-hour trip to the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) pool, where students engaged in swimming activities and games. The first day in the camp was enjoyable and fun as well as informative and adventurous and therefore the whole spirit of the camp was set for the rest of the days. On the second day at the Year 8 camp, we participated in a range of fun activities. The morning began with a trip to IMAX where, in groups, we viewed an interesting 3D movie using a giant screen. After the movie, we went for a tour at the Melbourne Museum. All these experiences where a form of entertainment and an educational process simultaneously. Next, we went to ACMI, which is Australia’s centre for the moving image, and afterwards took photos at ArtVo, an art gallery where we had fun taking creative photos. After this, there was free time at DFO South Wharf so we could shop and even take a break. We had dinner and then proceeded to divide into two groups. One of the groups went to the lawn bowls session, while the other group went for the rock-climbing session. In both activities, it allowed the students to have some sort of competition in a friendly manner. The second day at the camp was more eventful because it was informative, artistic, and exercising involved in a unique way.
At the end of all the fun activities, games, and all the craziness of the camp we had our final breakfast at CYC and then started packing to leave. In the morning, we visited the Queen Victoria Market commonly known as QVM, which was a market with stalls where visitors were allowed to roam around and shop as they desired. We also introduced ourselves to an interesting food and history tour, which enlightened us more about the market. After the visit to QVM we were brought to CYC to pick up our stuff and our luggage.
The final leg of the camp saw the group journey back to Mitcham Station, ending what the group regarded as a fun and informative camp. The three-day camp was packed with full of entertaining and educative activities, where year 8 students could make new friends focusing to make it a memorable camp for all. Overall, my favourite activity was the bike ride.
