Year 3 - Middle Unit
Literacy
During literacy over the past couple of weeks, we have been focussing on poetry. We are identifying the mood of different poems by using sound devices like onomatopoeia, alliteration and rhyme. We have been exploring text by Pamela Allen and Roald Dahl.
During our writing sessions, students have been focussing on vocabulary by listing nouns, adjectives and verbs about a specific topic. Year 3’s have been experimenting with and creating examples of both Haiku poems and Limericks. This has required them to use their knowledge of syllables and different poetic structures. We will continue to learn all about poetry until the end of the term!
Here are some examples of students poems:
Numeracy
Over the past two weeks, Year 3 students have been learning all about statistics! We have been practising, collecting, recording and interpreting lots of different data (both numerical and categorical!). We have been learning about different ways to display our data too - creating different tables and graphs both in our books and with the iPads.
Students went on a walk through the WPS gardens and recorded what different plants they saw, and how many of them there were. We used this data to create pie graphs, showing the number of trees, bushes, flowers and weeds in our gardens!
