Year 12 Formal

Year 12 Captains reflect on the night of nights

For the class of ‘24 cohort at Northcote High, formal was one of the most anticipated events of the year, a hallmark high school experience. Along with the year level coordinators, the formal committee had started organizing the event as early as February. From photography to food to flair, the majority of the event was student planned.

Thursday night itself was a magical moment of unity for us as a class. Seeing everyone in their best attire, together as a year level, made us appreciate how fleeting high school is. We realized how much of a community we had become over the last 6 years that we have been here.

The superlative (most-likely-to) awards were a highlight of the night, naming our cohort’s dynamic duo, cutest couple, or even most likely to be on reality TV. Even though most of us are in different friend groups, the awards were a chance for us to acknowledge the outstanding uniqueness and diversity of our entire year level. It brought us together more than we could have imagined.

The peak of the night was our beloved student band, Ed Hirst and the Crane Gang, featuring Ed Hirst, Asher Melzak-Parr, Asha Cooper, and Saskia Cormier. Who knew that a ballroom could turn into a mosh pit so quickly. It was incredible to hear our own classmates perform to their best. Even some of the teachers were drawn into the crowd, showing their best dance moves.

Previous years, we had been told how pivotal formal was, that the whole year level felt a lot closer after the momentous night. None of us had understood that feeling until last week, where regardless of the general obtuseness of year 12, we all had each other to fall back on. Hopefully the class of ‘25 can carry this torch, and we wish all the classes to come after us the same magic we experienced!

Your 2024 School Captains,

Yasmin Elsakawy, Quan Nguyen, Thea Niall, Alex Qu.
