In The Art Room

Term 3

Daffodils and Echidnas.

What do these have to do with one another you may ask.....?

We have been making, moulding, scratching, scoring, smoothing, glazing, decorating, shaping and admiring our exceptional clay creations.

Read on to find out.

Foundation

Look at our adorable Echidnas! We created texture by scraping with tools and a pointy snout by pinching our clay. We created their habitat using plasticine and real rocks and grass. Aren't they cute!

Grade 1

Pasta, Pasta, Pasta! We were inspired a fabulous book ,of the same title, to experiment with all shapes and sizes of pasta. Look at all of the different types of pasta we made! We even shaped a disk to make a bowl or plate.

Grade 2

We celebrated the pending arrival of spring with the creation of clay daffodils. This is the first time our young students have learned about rolling even slabs and joining clay with scratch and slip. They will be glazed just like the bowls we made but using yellows, oranges and white.

Grade 3 and 4

Last week we indulged in 'Clay Play!' The students were able to play, explore and have fun.

Today we got down to business and began making our very own personalised ceramic plate, to be used to eat our food that we create in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. Rolling a nice big even slab is tricky! Smoothing the slab is tricky but satisfying. We concentrated very hard on using our newly learned skills and focussed on making (almost) perfect slabs. Check out our young engineers, Flynn, James and Harry who invented a turntable to help them smooth there clay evenly! A big shout out to my brains trust, A, who found the grammatical error in my slideshow!

I'm so proud of our young makers. These will be plates they will use for a very long time.

Grade 5 and 6

Our trophies are taking shape and defying gravity. Our first firing revealed an almost break free result - nothing a little glue can't repair. I am astounded at the detail and fine willowy handles our students have achieved. We are painting the trophies with metallic gold paint and details with acrylic paint pens. What a statement our trophies make!
