We are preparing for some wonderful reading celebrations, being Book Week and RWTM!
You will see the corridor and various other areas of the school transformed into all things magical.
You may see some origami dragons and magical unicorns just to name a few wonderful art works created just for the love of reading.
We have also been busy preparing for our open day in November. Lots of individual art pieces and group collaborations for sale and auction.
Some exciting times ahead, busy and always beautiful in the Art Room. Love Mrs P
Life in prep is always exciting but this semester just gets better!
Already we have had a fantastic day celebrating being at school for 100 days! Time really does fly when you are having fun! The students loved getting dressed up and representing 100 in different ways. Counting the quantities was a wonderful way to practice our skip counting skills in an authentic way. We also made 100 day cookies, went on a 100 number hunt and imagined what it would be like to be 100! Evidently, some of the teachers have already reached this milestone!
This celebration was then closely followed by another! The 150th Williamstown North birthday celebration and the opening of the Olympics! What a day that was! The day kicked off with a whole school parade where the Preps proudly showed off their amazing costumes! Italy, New Zealand and the United Kingdom would have been proud! The weather was glorious and everyone got into the spirit of the occasion, cheering each other on. It really felt like the community coming together.
This feeling lasted the whole day with a Prep to Year Three disco after recess and a party for the parents in the evening! A great day was really had by all!
Week two was also the week that we launched this term's inquiry into living things with our Wild Action Incursion! If there was ever an experience that would hook the children in and ignite their interest in animals, this was it! The preps couldn’t wait to cuddle the Joey, pat the crocodile and listen to the cockatoo talk. The presenter was actually an old Williamstown North student who was amazing! She taught us so many cool facts about
reptiles, mammals, birds and amphibians and everyone left wanting to be a zoo keeper themselves!
Luckily, this week the Preps will get the opportunity to look after an animal themselves and see how they grow and change with our Henny Penny hatching program. Three baby chicks, Henny, Penny and Pip arrived yesterday along with 12 little eggs and already the students have been introduced to the cycle of life. Two baby chicks hatched overnight and today a group of students were lucky enough to see a chick emerging from the shell themselves! The look of wonder on their faces was priceless!
Hopefully, by the time we visit Bundoora Farm later this term, the Preps will be experts in looking after animals and knowing what they need to be healthy and happy.
Semester two is also an exciting time in Prep because the students get to reconnect with their old kinder educators and show them how much they have grown and learnt. We have already visited the Explorers kindergarten to read with the students and it won't be long before we welcome the other kinders into our classrooms. Our preps love having the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and be the big buddy like their year 6 friends. It is a wonderful way to build friendships that support the kinder students throughout their upcoming transition and when they start school in 2025.
Book Week Celebrations and Costume Parade: CBCA Book Week is coming! This year’s Book Week will run from Monday 19th August to Friday 23rd August (Week 6). This year’s theme is one we are very excited about, ‘Reading is Magic’. There’ll be many fun activities for students across the week, including our famous Masked Reader competition, buddy reads, book clubs, whole school shared reads, quizzes and a book fair!
On Friday, 23rd August, at 9:30am, there will be a costume parade where students are encouraged to dress up as one of their favourite book characters. The parade will be held at 9:30am on Tasmania (athletics track), and families are more than welcome to come along and watch the celebration. We’d love students to bring along the book that inspired their costume and share it with their class throughout the day.
Reading and Writing Together is Magic (RWTIM): Wednesday, 21st of August, 5.45pm-6.30pm. We are excited to announce the return of our annual student writing showcase event, Reading and Writing Together is Magic!
This evening event celebrates students’ literacy, as they present a short piece of their own original poetry to a small group of students and families. During class in the lead-up to the night, students will draft, revise, edit and publish their writing and rehearse their presentation in preparation for reading it aloud in front of you and the rest of their audience.
On the night, students and families are allocated to small multi-aged groups, in classrooms across the school. As well as sharing their own writing, students will hear from peers in their year level, and from those in year levels above and below them. Our senior students host the event in each classroom, as part of their leadership development.
We encourage all students and families to participate.
