Around the Campuses

Year 8 Engineering Club

The Y8 Engineering Club continued last term with several new participants.

The students progressed from soldering introductory electronics kits to more sophisticated kits which are designed to perform as rolling dice. The kits include all sorts of components such as Integrated Chips, light emitting diodes, resistors, transistors and capacitors.

The work is quite detailed and requires steady hands. All students are developing their skills and are producing very neat and tidy circuit boards.

The three new Y8 students that have joined the class are Christine Thanh, Kourtney Tran and John Ensink.

All students are to be commended for their continuing commitment to the club, particularly Vincent To who is always the first to arrive and very keen to help organise and set the workspace up.

Good work everyone!

Year 9 Rock Climbing Excursion

Towards the end of Term 2, all Year 9 students were involved in an excursion to Hardrock Climbing Centre in the city. This was a great opportunity for students to build their self-confidence, trust and social skills. Students were encouraged to trust one another in using the equipment correctly and supporting each other as they took on new heights.

The students were also provided with a tour of some significant landmarks within the CBD, in preparation for their Amazing Race in Term 4. For a part of the day, students had the freedom to independently explore Melbourne Central for some shopping and a bite to eat. Students demonstrated great maturity and responsibility in sticking to meeting times and catching public transport. A fun filled day was had by all!

sheCommerce Program

During the semester break, Year 11 students Erin Austin, Paige Albury, Anna Ha, Tran Nguyen and Ella Tamarapa attended the sheCommerce camp at the University of Melbourne. The students stayed at a residential college for three days and participated in seminars and practical activities. They had a wonderful experience and will continue to receive mentoring and 1:1 consultations with students and staff from the Faculty of Business and Economics throughout Year 12. Congratulations and well done to these students!

Tran Nguyen, 11D

Being a part of the sheCommerce Program was a valuable and meaningful experience. I met many talented girls and had a chance to be in a group with some of them. Moreover, our similar interests and passions allowed us to create a wonderful group research project. Personally, this program would be one of the most memorable moments in my high school year. The program gave me the skills needed to pursue business and an understanding of women's empowerment in business.

Erin Austin, 11F

Attending the SheCommerce camp has been a highlight of my year especially being able to experience the life of a first year commerce student at Melbourne University in a new exciting environment. The connections I have made and the events I have experienced are ones that I will forever cherish.
