Debating Team

For quite some time, EMC has been absent in the annual Debaters Association of Victoria (DAV) competitions, where schools from various regions compete against one another to determine which school is the best at arguing whilst in formal-casual attire.

But 2024 has seen a major development in the debating front, where Elisabeth Murdoch College collected the best of the best to compete within the Mount Eliza area.

Facing the likes of Peninsula Grammar, Toorak, Woodleigh, and Dromana Secondary included Caitlin Amery, Jack Boyle, Sophia Butrev, and Neven Petronijevic.

With their powers combined, these students would form an unstoppable force informally known as the D Team.

Whether we be debating about contact sports, rail loops, shorter school weeks, online elections, or password sharing, we made each night count.

And it shows! Out of the six pre-liminary rounds we have competed in, we've won five of them! How awesome is that? While a smooth six wins with zero losses would've been nice, a 5:1 ratio is more than enough to make use proud of our efforts.

And thanks to our undivided dedication to dignified arguing, we have officially made it into the next level of debating. Exciting stuff!

With a quick turn around of two weeks to prepare, our next debate is scheduled to be held on Thursday the 29th of August at Haileybury, debating as to whether or not museums and art exhibitions should be free.

The last few months have been an absolute blast for all of us, and we would highly recommend it to those who want to improve on their skills in arguing, public speaking, and using those big adult words correctly.

With that being said, we most definitely have our work cut out for ourselves, so crack open that energy drink, sharpen those pencils, and organize those cue cards, because the D Team is ready to fulfill their debating dream!
