Everyone Can Win: The Power of Participation

Under a brilliant blue sky, this week's Athletics Carnival came alive with a sea of vibrant house colours, cheers from the sidelines, and the laughter of students enjoying the day together. The sunshine, excitement, and team spirit created a wonderful sense of community.

Watching it all brought back memories of my own school days. To be honest, I never liked athletics. I hated running and didn’t think I was good at any sport. But like many students today, I still took part.

Looking back now as a school counsellor, I realise the greatest value of Athletics Day isn’t about winning races. It’s about participation. It’s about stepping onto the field even when you doubt yourself, giving something a go even if it’s not your strength, and choosing to be part of something bigger than yourself.

Every student who joins in is building resilience, courage, and a sense of belonging. They are learning to encourage others, work as a team, and celebrate effort as much as achievement.

Mental wellbeing grows through connection and participation. Sometimes the biggest victory isn’t crossing the finish line first, it’s simply showing up, joining your House, and discovering that you belong.

And on days like this, every child can win.
