Learning In My Level

Year 5/6
It has been a vibrant and exciting beginning of Term 3 for our students, particularly with the buzz and energy surrounding rehearsals for our much-anticipated school production, Porridge. Students have dedicated countless hours to learning their lines, practicing their songs, and polishing their dance routines. One of the highlights so far has been our full-dress rehearsal at Crossways Theatre, where students had the incredible opportunity to rehearse with microphones, full costumes, and the excitement of performing on a real stage. This experience gave students a taste of what it’s like to perform in a professional setting and brought a new level of confidence and enthusiasm to their performances. Our Year 5/6 students shared reflections on how much they enjoyed performing with the full setup and how proud they felt showcasing their hard work.
On the evening of July 28th and 29th, Cast 1 and Cast 2 performed the production. To say we are proud is an understatement. The performances ran incredibly smoothly and each student’s talents, dedication and enthusiasm were admirable! What a special night. There were laughs, tears and endless applaud for our 5/6 students.
Here is Annika, Ari F, Edie and Tessa’s recount of the festivities of production!
- Stop, thief, police! Come back here! You don’t even know the whole story of Porridge! Backstage the delightful characters from the nursery rhyme of old got ready wearing costumes, makeup and microphones! We have over 100 students running around backstage trying unsuccessfully to be quiet as our excitement takes over. Rehearsals have been going on since February and us students were working extremely hard! “Not too hot, not too cold, but just right” were Papa Bear’s famous words before he got locked away. We hope you loved the amazing, breakfast cereal filled production, PORRIDGE!
In Maths, we’ve been exploring angles. Students have been developing their understanding of acute, right, obtuse and reflex angles and learning how to accurately measure them using protractors. To make learning practical and hands-on, students explored the classroom environment to find and measure angles in everyday objects such as door handles, whiteboard edges, books etc. They also applied their skills to read and calculate angles on an analogue clock. It’s been a great way to connect mathematical concepts with the world around us.
In Writing, students have begun a new unit focused on information reports. They’ve been learning about the structure and purpose of this text type, examining how information is organised clearly and logically through features such as headings, subheadings, paragraphs, etc. Through modelled examples and shared reading, students are discovering how authors present factual information in an engaging and informative way. The class is now beginning to brainstorm and plan their own reports, selecting topics of personal interest and using graphic organisers to map out key facts and details. We are looking forward to seeing how students apply their learning to create well-structured and informative pieces of writing over the coming weeks!
What a fabulous start to Term 3! Well done Year 5/6
