Making Connections through Indonesian
It’s been a busy and engaging Term 2 for our year 7 and 8 Indonesian students at Berwick College!
Across our classes, students have been diving into Indonesian film studies. Depending on their class, students have explored Lima Elang, Keluarga Cemara, or Garuda di Dadaku. These films provided a fantastic opportunity to discuss Indonesian family life, resilience, teamwork, and values. Keluarga Cemara, available on Netflix, has been a standout—students and families are encouraged to watch it together!
Some classes have also taken part in Indonesian scouting activities, helping students better understand the important role of Pramuka (scouting) in Indonesian culture.
Year 8 High Achievers' Program (HAP) students, along with some mainstream classes, have been learning about traditional Indonesian housing. Using the website Dollar Street, students compared a variety of Indonesian homes and linked housing styles to income levels, gaining a better understanding of how geography and economics shape daily life.
In exciting news, some year 8 students had a visit from Berwick College alumnus Ty Barrot, who began learning Indonesian here, graduated in 2020, and is now studying Indonesian and Law at university.
Ty shared his journey and inspired students to see the long-term benefits of language learning.
Looking ahead to Term 3, year 7 and mainstream year 8 classes will be learning to describe friends, focusing on personality traits and interests.
Meanwhile, year 8 HAP students will explore language around housing in greater depth, learning to describe different rooms and physical features of a home.
We’re proud of the hard work our students have done this term and are excited for the cultural and language learning still to come!
