Year 7

What have you enjoyed in your first semester at Berwick?

7C - We’re 7C and we’ve been super busy this term! In PE, we’ve been playing footy which has been so much fun, especially practising our skills like dribbling, shooting and working to win our tournament next term. In Maths, we’ve been learning about ratios. It’s actually pretty interesting seeing how ratios work in real life, like sharing lollies fairly or working out maps. In Humanities, we’ve been learning about different jobs and how people work. It’s been eye-opening to see how many different careers there are and what skills people need. Science has been all about living environments. We’ve been exploring different habitats and learning how living things interact with each other and their surroundings. Finally, in English, we’ve been working on debating. We’ve practised coming up with arguments, rebuttals and how to speak confidently in front of the class. We're pretty loud and chatty so we're finally putting that to good use.

7E - Camp – despite a bug infestation, we enjoyed playing Uno late into the night, getting to try the giant swing and the pool where we played volleyball and dived into the depths like mermaids. English – our teacher Miss McCann makes it so engaging and we love having the opportunity to improve our creative skills with someone who believes in us. Interschool sports –particularly the feeling of achievement after winning the games, but we don’t mind the occasional day out of classes as well.  PE: Our teacher Miss Varadi has made PE so engaging. We have loved doing 'Just Dance' with her – the feeling of freedom as we watched the rain trickle down outside as we danced to our heart’s content and Sport where we always get to play a mini game at the start, such as 'Kings, Queens, Cavaliers' and 'Ship, Shark, Shore'.

7I - As we reach the halfway point of year 7, 7I has taken a moment to reflect on the many memorable experiences we've shared so far. One of the standout favourites was Year 7 camp – Isaac and Ava both agreed it was a highlight, while Leon especially loved the giant swing, saying, “When I went to the top, I got a big adrenaline rush!” Many of our classmates said that the highlight of their year so far has been making new friends. In the classroom, we have enjoyed trying new things. Lacey has really enjoyed exploring her creativity in Art, and Kallan has loved working hands-on in Design Technology. The sporting events have also been a highlight for many, both in PE classes and interschool competitions.  It’s been a vibrant and exciting start to secondary school, and we can’t wait to see what the second half of the year brings!

7H - Some highlights from this part of the year are when we went to camp and one of the activities, the flying fox, that was really fun, and the view was amazing. Also, another highlight of the year is when my friends and I were hanging out, Cleo made this funny song, and I couldn't stop laughing that I started choking. It was one of the best highlights this year. Overall, this part of the year has been great and I can't wait for next semester - Georgie.

To be honest I had the best time in term 1. The events, for example, cross country, athletics and my personal favourite is the interschool sport. I loved how on the first day I found new friends instantly and we all explored the school and getting used to the school. When we found out our Houses, that was a good time as well as we got ice cream from the ice cream truck, that was my best moment of semester 1 - Maseeh.

If I had to pick a highlight from my school semester, it would be when we studied the art of mimes and learnt more about the subject. Some things we did for this learning unit in Drama was writing an essay about what mimes were, the origins of them, what mimes do, the various types of mimes and a real-life mime that existed and performed in real life. I chose Charlie Chaplin. We also played plenty of miming games, and watched a movie that demonstrated miming, which was Bean, The ultimate disaster movie. I quite enjoyed studying mimes, as it was fascinating to learn about a performing style - Lucy.

My highlight for semester one was probably the events like the big freeze day. I also enjoyed the last day of term 1 when we saw the dance academy perform and then had pancakes afterwards. This term has been full of fun and adventures - Cyrus.

My highlight for the first two terms was an event that happened in Term One, this was the incredible experience of going to Grasmere Creek for our Humanities excursion. For one Wednesday, we had the privilege of one session, going to Grasmere Creek and filling in a little leaflet about the area and the natural observations of it, which included water testing, human activity and connection to the environment as well as sketching out the area. In my previous primary years, I was never able to do such a thing, so it was a new experience on many levels; I learned a lot! I was able to personally walk with nature, and even though it was a little stressful to put all of these details down on the leaflet, I believe that the experience was altogether worth it. I also have a great interest with humanities as a subject, which further made the experience more noticeable to me. I thank all of the staff and humanities teachers for organising the event - Alice. In semester one, I had a lot of fun. I participated in events such as Cross Country, Athletics, and Year 7 Intersport school sport soccer. In the Interschool soccer, I scored three goals for my team, which took our team to the Semi Finals, but unfortunately, we lost the semifinals. I also got 97 and 100 percent in the English CAT this Term - Ayaan.

7J - The highlights of our first semester of high school were making new friends, the swimming carnival, the interschool sports especially netball. Term one and two have been a blast, filled with fun activities and a great start to many friendships.

Champions Corner

Well done to Reshan who has been graded to an orange belt in karate. Keep up the amazing work and you will be black belt very soon.

Reya is getting the opportunity to be in an AFL commercial. We will be watching out for you when the commercial is released.

Lastly, well done to Athvithan for participating in the Peninsula Basketball Tournament.

Year 7 Literacy

Ms Swain's year 7 Literacy class celebrated the end of their Unit on the Framework on Food by having a BBQ. Students have been working collaboratively the last couple of lessons to research and plan their burger recipe. Students created a menu and used their knowledge of procedural texts to write up a recipe for their burgers. Well done! See you next term for our Identity Framework.
