Principal Message

Friday 27th June

From the Principal’s Desk

It’s hard to believe that next week is the last week of Term 2!

I’m delighted to announce the appointment of Bronwyn (Bron) Steele as our new Assistant Principal. Bron joins us from Lyndhurst Primary School and brings with her a wealth of experience, particularly in Student Wellbeing, Inclusion, Curriculum Implementation, and instructional coaching. She will be a warm, knowledgeable, and positive addition to our Senior Leadership Team. Bron has already spent several days on-site, engaging with staff and familiarising herself with our school community, and she will continue to do so in the lead-up to her official commencement at the start of Term 3. Please take a moment to read the lovely message Bron has shared in this week’s newsletter.

Enrolments

We’re excited to be welcoming several new students to Mitcham Primary School at the beginning of Term 3, these students will be joining Grades 2, 3, 4, and 5. At the same time, we will be farewelling a small number of students, and we wish them and their families all the very best in their new schools and communities.

If your family is relocating at the end of this term, please notify the school office by early next week so we can prepare the necessary documentation and ensure a smooth transition.

Our 2026 Prep enrolments are tracking strongly. A reminder that enrolment applications for Prep 2026 close on 26th July, with offers sent out on Monday 28th July.

School Council Update

Thank you to our committed and hardworking School Council, who met on Tuesday evening. During the meeting, Council approved a revised budget that allows us to proceed with two exciting projects: the full refurbishment of the Junior School toilets and replacement of flooring in the BER building. These upgrades will significantly enhance our learning and working environments, and we’re proud to be in a financial position to prioritise them. We anticipate these works will take place during the September school holidays.

Mitcham Primary School has also been scheduled for a Minimum Standards and Child Safe Standards Compliance Assessment in Term 1, 2026. This new model involves working collaboratively with an assessor from the School Compliance Unit to review our policies and practices. At this week’s meeting, School Council endorsed three updated Child Safe Standards documents, which will soon be made available to our wider community via the school website.

Facilities Update

We are incredibly proud to share that Mitcham Primary School has been recognised by the Department of Education as an Asset Management Information System (AIMS) ‘Super School’; an acknowledgment that our facilities management practices represent best practice across Victorian Government schools.

This recognition is a direct reflection of the exceptional work of our Facilities Manager, Adrian, whose commitment, skill, and attention to detail keep our school safe, functional, and welcoming. In addition to overseeing Occupational Health and Safety and the AIMS system, Adrian has led several key building and grounds projects this term, including:

  • Major works funded through the Rolling Facilities Evaluation Program (front façade restoration, painting, roof repairs)
  • Refurbishment of the former junior school computer lab into a new space for learning support
  • Expansion of our vegetable gardens and planter boxes
  • Managing a complex plumbing emergency in Block A
  • Coordinating the upcoming refurbishment of the middle school playground, which is scheduled to begin next week

We continue to be well supported by Bliss Maintenance, who provide ongoing, high-quality garden maintenance across the school grounds.

Connecting Community in 2025

As part of our commitment to Connecting Community in 2025, we are thrilled to see the success of our new ‘Mitch-Café’ - our relaxed tea and coffee catch-up in the staffroom following Friday morning assemblies. Around 15 parents are joining us each week, enjoying the opportunity to connect and share conversations. If you are free on a Friday morning, we would love to see you there!

Our Parents and Carers Association also met this Thursday and have some fantastic social events planned for Term 3 - please check later in the newsletter for more details. We are also looking forward to our next Fathering Project event next week, which will be hosted in the Art room and will include a fun, creative activity.

Wishing all our families a safe and restful weekend.

Warmly,

Erin
