ST LIBORIUS FEAST DAY – JULY 23rd
A little information about our patron Saint, St Liborius
St Liborius was born in the city of Le Mans in southern France into a noble family. Despite his background, he chose a life devoted to prayer, learning, and quiet reflection. In the year 348, he was appointed Bishop of Le Mans, a role he faithfully served in for 49 years. After his death in 397, his legacy of peace and understanding lived on, and he was later named the patron saint of Paderborn in Germany.
Our own St Liborius Church in Eaglehawk carries a special connection to this remarkable saint. The foundation stones were laid in 1868 by Dr Henry Backhaus, and the church was opened the following year. It was named after St Liborius—the patron saint of Dr Backhaus's hometown of Paderborn. Remarkably, our church is 1/8 the size of the Cathedral in Paderborn, and ours is the only church and school in Australia named in honour of St Liborius.
Peacock feathers became a symbol of St Liborius due to a beautiful legend associated with the transfer of his relics and the events that followed.
THE LEGEND OF THE PEACOCK FEATHERS
In the year 836, more than 400 years after St Liborius’s death, his relics were transferred from Le Mans, France to Paderborn, Germany, to strengthen the spiritual bond between the two cities and dioceses. As the story goes, during the journey to Paderborn: A peacock began to lead the procession and miraculously stayed with the group the entire way—over 700 kilometers. When the procession reached Paderborn, the peacock reportedly died shortly after the relics were safely placed in the cathedral, as if its purpose had been fulfilled.
