Year 4 Urban Gardening

In gardening club last week we had an incursion where we learnt about biodiversity with Clancy and the group from B&B Highway (Bed and Breakfast for Birds, Bees & Biodiversity). We went to the oval with our partners and we searched for different types of animals and insects. After that we got to plant some Australian native plants and we learnt how to take care of them.
We saw lots of bugs and bees: blue banded bees, teddy bear bees, blue ringed bees, a praying mantis, a huge millipede and a few little beetles!

The Year 4 gardeners have been learning about biodiversity and native pollinators in our Bee Highway incursions. So far we have planted some native Australian plants in the garden and have made some bee hotels with clay and sand.
In our gardening program we have weeded, planted, composted and shredded paper for the compost bins. We have also planted marigold seeds and we tried to plant a venus flytrap but it unfortunately failed :( Anyway, we will try again soon.
Now back to the bee hotels, we built them to attract stingless, native bees and keep them safe from birds and habitat loss.
During our 2nd incursion with the B&B Highway people we made native bee hotels. We got a plastic plant tube and clay and mushed it around in our hands, then we got some red sand and mushed it with the clay. Next, we stuck this into the tube. Using a stick, we made a hole in the centre for creatures to climb into. Everyone stacked their individual tubes to create a native bee hotel! We are hoping the pollinators will be attracted to the bee hotel and lay their eggs in it and then they can pollinate our school garden! We have also planted native plants in our Year 4 garden, near the oval. We take turns watering the new plants everyday.
