Physical Education

In The 'Classroom'

It's been a jam packed month in the Physical Education 'Classroom'.

Our Foundation students have been developing an awareness of their bodies and surroundings by playing games like 'Builders and Bulldozers', 'Pizza Maker' and 'Octopus'. They progressed quickly in the term to developing their throwing and catching skills using various objects like beanbags, tennis balls and foam rockets.

In Year One and Two, students developed their teamwork and problem solving strategies in a number of physical challenges early in the term. They completed a unit focusing on the fundamental movement skills of throwing, catching and kicking.

Year One's built towers to practice their target throwing.
Year One's built towers to practice their target throwing.

The Year Three to Six students have all completed a unit on 'Invasion/Territory Games', developing their teamwork and game sense in attacking and defending spaces on a court or field. They improved their passing, dribbling and shooting skills while playing modified games based around basketball, netball, AFL and soccer.

Swimming

It's been a big swimming term for our Year Four - Six students with the swimming trials, House Swimming Carnival, Seaside District Swimming Carnival and The Kingston Division Swimming Carnivals all taking place.

House Swimming

Congratulations to Gold House for taking out the BRPS House Swimming Shield for 2025 (their second win in a row), followed by Red House in second, Blue in third and Green in fourth.

It was great to see so many students supporting and encouraging each other no matter what house they were in. Thank you to all the teachers and parents who helped out to make it a successful day for the students.

District Swimming

It was a bright and early start today as the team gathered at 8am on Thursday the 6th of March to head to Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre to compete against the other seven schools in our local Seaside District. The excitement was high and spirits were up as the first races began. Madeleine Wakefield and Ewan Toner set the tone for the day winning the first two freestyle races (and also their respective butterfly races later in the day). From then on there was a steady stream of Black Rock students heading to the recording table to receive ribbons as individual swimmers consistently placed in the top three. The strong depth of our team was on show as it was a range of students achieving great results.

Once the individual races had concluded, rumours started to spread that Black Rock were 'doing quite well' on the points tally and were in with a good shot at the shield if they put in a good showing in the relays. The teams did just that, finishing in the top three in 6 out of 8 relays including the 10y girls relay win. Beaumaris North (winners of the past three district events) finished very strongly, winning the last four relays of the day. However, it wasn't enough to catch Black Rock after their consistent high placings all day.

The final overall placings were:

Black Rock PS- 232 points

Beaumaris North PS - 216 points

Sandringham PS - 203 points

A fantastic achievement from the whole team who should be extremely proud of how well they represented themselves and Black Rock Primary throughout the carnival, showing great sportsmanship towards others and encouragement of their teammates.

Thankyou to Catherine Brand for organising the team throughout the day and all the parents who came along to support. A particular mention to Cheryl Toner, Merissa Wakefield, Caroline King and Laura Anderson who gave up their time to assist with timing on pool deck (a notoriously difficult role to get volunteers for on district carnival day).

Some notable results of the day were:

1st Place (progressed to Division):

Madeleine Wakefield - Freestyle, Butterfly

Ewan Toner - Freestyle, Butterfly

2nd Place:

Milly Atkins - Freestyle, Backstroke

Division Swimming

After finishing first in their district events, Madeleine Wakefield, Ewan Toner and the 9/10 boys Freestyle relay team (Ewan Toner, Nate Catlin, James Blain and Fletcher Wheatley) headed to Oakleigh Recreation Centre on Wednesday the 12th of March to compete in the Kingston Division Swimming Carnival. It was a great experience for the swimmers with Madeleine finishing 2nd in freestyle and 5th in butterfly and Ewan finishing 2nd in both freestyle and butterfly. The boys relay team had a fantastic swim, shaving 5 seconds off their district winning time to come home in first with a division record time of 2:50.5. They will now compete in the Southern Metropolitan Region Carnival on April 2nd and we wish them all the best as their journey continues.

Run Club 25

We are very pleased to announce that Run Club is back for 2025 for students who would like to build their skills and fitness ahead of the BRPS Cross Country Carnival early in Term 2 (and District Cross Country event later in the term).

Starting Thursday 27th of March (next week!) a group of parents led by Susanne Baker and Sara Zoelle will be putting the students through their paces on Thursday mornings between 8am and 8:45am on the oval. A number of staff have volunteered their time to supervise each week (you might even see some of them joining in if they can be torn away from their coffee).

Whilst the running club is predominantly aimed at the students in Years 4 - 6, younger students are welcome to attend. We are asking however that if your child in Foundation - Year 2 is going to attend that a parent also stays to supervise them in case the activity becomes a bit too much for them.

Thank-you so much to Susanne and Sara (and their team of parents) for their enthusiasm and dedication to continuing this program after such a successful Run Club and Cross Country season last year. We look forward to seeing lots of keen runners on the oval over the next two weeks and throughout Term 2.
