A Snap Shot into Maths

'Four Go'

Learning Intention:

To develop fluency in multiplication and division while applying strategic thinking to place values on a number line.

Learning Experience:

In this two-player game, students take turns selecting two numbers from the given grid and multiplying or dividing them. The resulting number is then placed on a number line (0–20). The objective is to get four numbers in a row without interruption from the opponent. If a calculation results in a number outside the range, the player forfeits their turn. As they play, students strategise ways to win by considering number combinations and the impact of their moves.

Enabling Prompts:

  • What happens when you multiply or divide by 1?
  • Can you predict whether your answer will be greater or smaller before calculating?
  • What multiplication or division facts do you already know that can help you place a number?

Extending Prompts:

  • Can you plan two or three moves ahead to block your opponent?
  • How does the choice of operation (× or ÷) impact possible outcomes?
  • Can you create a strategy to maximize your chances of winning?
  • Add another operation (- or +). What do you notice?
  • Are there any numbers on the line you are unable to create?

Benefits of This Lesson:

  • Reinforces multiplication and division fluency in a fun, competitive setting.
  • Encourages strategic thinking and problem-solving.
  • Develops number sense by placing values on a number line.
  • It supports logical reasoning and planning ahead, and it has skills valuable beyond maths.
  • Extends their understanding of prime numbers.

This game encourages students to think critically about numbers and operations while having fun.

We encourage families to try it at home. Who will be the first to get four in a row?
