DROP OFF AND PICK UP IN LANTANA
Please be mindful of the road signs on Lantana Road. It is a NO PARKING zone in front of the school, during school start and finish times. To ensure a smooth and safe process, we have a designated pick-up system at the end of the day where a teacher monitors and guides students into cars lined up in the queue. This system works efficiently when there are no parked cars breaching the signage during these times. Thank you for your cooperation.
🌱 NAPLAN
Congratulations to our Grade 5 students on the completion of their NAPLAN assessments!
🌱 LITERACY
This week, Grade 5 students are continuing their mentor text, War Horse by Michael Morpurgo. Students will work on developing their ability to use textual evidence to respond to comprehension questions using the RACE structure (Restate, Answer, Cite, Explain.) There will be a specific focus on using vocabulary in context to work out its meaning.
The Grade 6 students are excited, having finished their mentor text The Silver Donkey by Sonya Hartnett this week. We will complete a comprehensive book review which will demonstrate students understanding of the characters, themes, vocabulary and figurative language (metaphors, personification, similes, idioms, oxymorons, alliteration etc.)
What you can do at home
Ask your child to share what they have read in the mentor texts during week. Enable them to read texts of their own interests on a daily basis and talk to them about what they’re reading and why.
Grade 5 students will focus on creative writing to expand their understanding of simple, compound and complex sentence structures. Students will use their knowledge of appositives to extend the detail of their ideas. There will be a specific focus on sentence boundary punctuation, commas and quotation marks.
Our mentor text The Silver Donkey contained a variety of tales and fables that had strong moral messages. These stories always included a donkey as a symbol of courage, friendship, sacrifice and strength. Grade 6 students will be writing their own stories, borrowing this symbol to be a feature for the plot of their story.
In Spelling, students in Grade 5 will continue to work on their independent word lists, based on their results on the SWST. This will continue each week, with new words and a variety of activities to choose from.
Grade 6 students will be using Nessy to practice sounds and spelling patterns that were identified as areas of focus in their pre-assessment. This will help us to ensure all students are ready to complete Nessy tasks for homework.
All students are encouraged to use the app, 'Nessy' to consolidate their understanding of spelling patterns.
🌱 NUMERACY
Grade 5 and 6 students will explore the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) through engaging number talks and activities. These will reinforce the skill of partitioning and using vertical algorithm strategies while connecting these concepts to our recent focus on decimals.
Students will apply their learning by solving real-world problems, deepening their understanding through practical application.
What you can do at home
Children are encouraged to continue with using the 'Mathletics' app, along with the 'My Numeracy' section of Essential Assessment to reinforce the skills and areas taught at school.
🌱 CBL
Students will continue to work in groups to propose a new law for the Year 5/6 community. They will finalise their law, present their idea to their classroom teacher for consideration, and then debate it in a mock parliament before a final decision is made in the coming weeks.
Essential Question:
How and why do people connect to achieve laws in society?
Guiding Questions:
- What does it mean to be a citizen?
- What is democracy in Australia and why is voting in a democracy important?
- What are the roles and responsibilities of the different levels of government and how do they connect?
- How are laws developed and enforced?
