Year 12 VCE Agriculture and Horticulture

Last week, we welcomed Ms Challis and her Year 12 VCE Ag Hort students from St. Augustine’s Kyabram, to join our GSSC students for a practical incursion about using drones in agriculture and horticulture.

Robert Graham, a drone contractor for agricultural, horticultural and fire management organisations, spoke about licensing requirements, proximity to flight paths and airports, various sizes of drones and the many applications in both ag and hort. He spoke about how drones can be important tools for checking water troughs on outback station to spreading beneficial insects, chemicals and fertilisers on paddocks that may be too wet for a tractor or too inaccessible, allowing jobs to get done as needed without damaging the landscape and saving money. He also spoke about the limitations of drones such as battery life and range.

The students are now preparing for their first SAC on technology and innovation in ag and hort.

Year 10 Agriculture students learning about ruminant digestion

Recently, the year 10 Agriculture classes learnt about ruminant digestive systems found in sheep, cattle, goats, deer and other ruminants. They demonstrated their understanding of each organ and the order they occur through modelling the systems with plasticine. Students worked in groups to create, label, present and explain how the system worked.
