Grade 1 & 2

Welcome to a new year on our learning journey! The Level 1/2 students have made an excellent start to the year. They have settled quickly and are getting to know their new classroom routines. It has been lovely to watch them reconnect with their old friends and make some new ones.

In Reading, we have looked at the clues in texts and illustrations which help us to make predictions about a story.

In Writing, we have been learning about diaries and looking at life through the eyes of someone else. We have written diary entries as worms, dogs, pencils and a variety of minibeasts! We are so proud of the way the students are using their imaginations!

In Maths, we have been focusing on improving our knowledge of Place Value. We have been doing a lot of counting and using materials to help us represent numbers.

The students have made a wonderful start to their learning and we really want to focus on their independence. Please encourage them to pack and carry their own bags, line up independently and be responsible for their own belongings!

Thanks for ensuring your child has made a smooth transition to Grade 1 or 2. Have a great weekend!

Grade 3 & 4

Welcome back to the 2024 school year! We are so pleased with how the students have settled in since returning to school. It has been wonderful to see smiles as Grade 3s gain confidence in their new classes and Grade 4s set a positive example for their younger peers. New friendships have been forming as students get to know each other and we are so proud of how quickly and competently they have taken to classroom routines with their new teachers.

In Reading this week, we have been looking for interesting vocabulary as we read. Students recorded these words in their books, looked up the definitions and then classified them based on the feelings they evoke.

Students have relished the creativity of Writing lessons this week. After reading and using the text 'The Day the Crayons Quit' as inspiration, they were tasked with the challenge of writing a letter to themselves from the perspective of a classroom object, thinking about what the object might feel, see and hear. We loved seeing the students' imagination and humour shine through in these pieces!

We have been looking at place value in Maths, including representing 4 and 5 digit numbers in different ways. This is in preparation for the term's learning task, and students have used a range of methods and materials to show their understanding of the concept.

This week in Sport we started preparing for Athletics Day by running a variety of rotations including long jump, hurdles, relays, shot put and tunnel ball. It was great to see the students trying their best with each activity and enjoying the friendly competition with their peers!

This Tuesday 13th is our Level 3/4 Information Night. It will be held in Rooms 3 & 4 in the Main Building and commences at 6pm. We hope to see you there.

A reminder to please send along the following named items for your child if you haven't already: hat, drink bottle, art smock, library bag and headphones.

Thanks for your support for a smooth transition back to school!

Grade 5 & 6

Welcome back parents and carers to our 2024 school year. We know that it's going to be a wonderful one and we are thrilled to share all of the exciting things that we have been up to so far.

Across all of our subjects we have been establishing learning communities and allowing extra time for discussion about expectations, the Learning Pit and how students can get the most out of their time at school. It has been delightful to get to know your children on an individual level and watch as they expand their friendships and learning partnerships.

In reading and writing we have been exploring how building tension within writing engages the reader and how we can use the pebble, rock, boulder method to do this.

Maths has focused on place value (from thousandths to millions) and how this system works. This revision will be a great foundation for future learning taking place as well as a preparation for our year 5 students undertaking NAPLAN later this term. If you are interested, take a look at the cards below which explain the curriculum link and what this might look like in the classroom or at home:

Interschool sport training has begun in preparation for our sports day coming up in week 5. It was a lovely day on Wednesday to get out and enjoy the sunshine while spending time with different peers and moving our bodies.

Remember that this will be happening each Wednesday and it would be wonderful if children had a drink bottle, comfortable shoes (normal school shoes are fine) and their hat on these days.

This term our Inquiry unit is based around democracy and we have only just begun exploring what this means. We are eager to learn more particularly in our online webinar session on the 19th.

On Tuesday it was Safer Internet Day 2024 and we celebrated by participating in an online webinar within classes. The session was called ‘Level up’ and focused on creating positive gaming culture. Check out some screenshots from the slides and activities we were completing.

You may also like to check out some of the parent webinars that are available from the e-Safety Commissioner. You can find the parent webinar schedule here: https://www.esafety.gov.au/sites/default/files/2023-12/2024-parent-carer-webinar-schedule.pdf

Next Tuesday we will be hosting a parent information session in the library. We would love to see you there! We will be discussing topics such as homework, NAPLAN, transition, camp, inter school sports, specialist classes and the instructional model. Slides will be made available if you are unable to make it.

As always, please feel free to contact your child’s classroom teacher if there are any issues you wish to discuss. If you are a part of the 5/6A or 5/6O community it is always a good idea to include both teachers in your email.

We hope you have a great fortnight and look forward to sharing more with you in the coming year!
