NAPLAN

In 2024, Year 7 & 9 students will be participating in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) between Wednesday 13 – Monday 25 March.   NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge and skills in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. Test results provide valuable information for students, parents, teachers and principals and is used to support student learning growth and achievement.

Gisborne Secondary College’s NAPLAN Test Schedule will run as follows:

Students will be using their own devices to complete the NAPLAN tests so they must ensure that they bring their device (fully charged) each day.

Headphones are needed for the Conventions of Language test only.  They are optional for the Writing & Reading tests, and not permitted for the Reading test.  If students do not have their own headphones, we will be able to provide them on the day.

Over the last few weeks, our IT technicians have been installing the NAPLAN Locked Down Browser on all Yr 7 & Yr 9 student devices.  We ask that you have a conversation with your child regarding their preparedness for NAPLAN.

Next week, students will have the opportunity in their Maths & English classes to familiarise themselves with the online testing platform and the style of questioning by completing practice tests on the NAPLAN Online Public Demonstration Site.

Catch up tests will run between Tuesday 19 – 25 March for students who are absent on NAPLAN test days.

Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter for consideration by parents and carers in consultation with the NAPLAN Coordinator, Simone Moore.   If, after consultation, you decide to withdraw your child, a student withdrawal form must be completed by Wednesday 6 March. Please contact the NAPLAN Coordinator at simone.moore@education.vic.gov.au to request your child’s withdrawal from NAPLAN.

Support can be arranged for students with disabilities, if the student regularly uses similar support for classroom assessment tasks.  Exemptions may be granted to students with significant intellectual disabilities and to students who have been learning English for less than one year.  Parental consent is required before any disability adjustment can be granted and parents will be contacted by our Inclusion Leader, Prue Jones prue.jones@education.vic.gov.au to discuss this.
