From the Principal

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, Staff and Friends of Mazenod College,

It is widely accepted that schools are indeed busy places all year round. The start to the school year seems to be the busiest time, but I think our feelings at this time overshadow any busyness, with feelings of excitement, enthusiasm and happiness, perhaps in sharing the fun of our holidays.

Last week we welcomed over 870 students back from holidays, with many new young faces joining our Mazenod College community. Welcome to our new students and their families and likewise to our new staff.

The College staff gathered for Mass on Monday, 29 January, for the first time with the staff from St Brigid’s, at Our Lady of Lourdes parish church where Fr Joe Antony OMI and Fr Michael McMahon OMI celebrated the beginning of the new school year. At this Mass, we also welcomed those staff new to both of our Colleges;

It is my pleasure to welcome our new staff joining us at Mazenod;

Mr David Balatonyi

Mr Dominic Connolly-Brown

Ms Danielle Du Plessis

Ms Allira Humblestone

Mrs Kelly Marsh

Mr Sam Massey

Mr Mitchell Migro

Ms Vicki Patterson

Ms Mia Simpson

Mr Timothy Travis

Miss Emily Wallis

And we welcome back Mrs Hayley Hancock, returning to Mazenod College after two years of parental leave.

We look to the year ahead determined to excite and energise our students about learning.

It is always a delight to inform our community and to celebrate the wonderful achievements of our Year 12 students. It is with pleasure that I congratulate the Year 12 Class of 2023, staff and families on their achievements. We acknowledged a number of students for their outstanding individual achievements at our first College assembly on Monday. We have shared many of these results through our social media platforms and we have included further details of these students and their achievements separately in this newsletter.

We are very much looking forward to commencing the school with our Opening College and Ash Wednesday Mass on Wednesday 14 February at 9:40am. This year, our Mass coincides with Ash Wednesday, an important celebration on the Liturgical calendar. We cordially invite parents and families to share in this celebration of Eucharist, a wonderful occasion for all in our community to gather in prayer to ask for God’s blessings on our school year and to recognise the commencement of the season of Lent.

Please consider attending the opening social function of the College year which is sponsored by the Parent Association. The Parent Welcome Sundowner is a relaxed evening and an opportunity to build our community, especially welcoming our new Year 7 parents and those joining us in other year groups. A reminder that this is an adult-only event and not for students and children. Please RSVP by Tuesday 13 February so that we can cater for the evening. We look forward to seeing many of you there.

It is amazing that as we commence a new school year, our focus and action is also on continuing to manage the enrolments that keep coming in, as we fast become a boys school of choice in the area. In light of this, we are about to embark on our enrolment interviews for the Year 7/2026 cohort commencing in Week 5 this term. If you are interested in your son attending Mazenod and wish to be involved in this interview process, please see the details contained in this newsletter.

I thank all of our young people for starting this year with a wonderful spirit of community, enthusiasm and joy. It bodes well for an exciting year ahead.

God bless.

Simon Harvey
