Fabulous Foundation

Term 1 Week 2- 9th February 2024

What an incredible start to the year our amazing Preps have had. We are so proud of how brave, kind, patient and caring every single student has been. We are already seeing beautiful friendships blossoming as they settle into their new routine. We can't wait to see how much more they all grow as they become more confident and more independent than they already are.

What we are learning!

Maths:

As we begin our learning journey, we start by practising our counting. We have learnt how to count, write and identify numbers to 20. We have been singing rhymes and songs that use repetition to help us remember each number, as well as using a range of objects to trace and write each number. We are working on ensuring it is the right direction. At home, you can continue tracing and writing each number, as well as singing counting songs like ‘1,2,3,4,5 once I caught a fish alive’, ‘5 little ducks went out one day’, and ‘5 little monkeys jumping on the bed’.

Little Learners love literacy:

Little learners love literacy (LLLL) is our Phonics program. The LLLL program guides us as we thoroughly learn the sounds, words and formation of one letter/sound per week. This week we are focusing on the letter and sound /m/. We are introduced to a new character each week, this week is Milo the Monkey. You can listen to a song all about him via the following link:Milo Monkey – literacy song for kids exploring the letter 'M' by Susie & Phil (youtube.com).

Writing:

This week we have learnt how to sit at our desk, and how to correctly hold a pencil. We have learnt that our bottoms and backs need to be up against the back of the chair, with our feet flat on the floor. We have also introduced the snappy crocodile as a way to remember how to correctly grip onto the pencil. Many of us also use a pencil grip to help us!

Reading:

Each week we focus on a different text that guides us through our comprehension and understanding skills. This week we are reading ‘the family book’, by Todd Parr. We are learning how to ask and answer questions about the book, how to infer what the book will be about before we read it and we are focusing on 3 words from the book to further understand and add to our word wall. Our word wall words this week are; near, alike and celebrate.

Leader In me:

We have spent a lot of time learning all about the 7 habits. We have synergised by playing together and cleaning up as a team. We have thought win-win by talking with our friends while we play to make sure everyone is happy and included. And we have been proactive by being in charge of our own bodies, and making sure that we are always making good and safe choices.

Inquiry:

This term our Inquiry subject is Personal and Social Capabilities. We will learn about our emotions and how we can be the best version of ourselves, hence; Sharpening the Saw (habit 7). This week, we have learnt about having a growth mindset, and the power of yet. At home, you can talk about how you may not be able to do something yet, but with time, practise and positive thinking, you will be able to do anything you set your mind to.
