Amazing 5/6
What have we been up to?
The 5/6 teaching team would like to welcome back all our 5/6 students and parents to 2024. We have all had an amazing start to the year and are excited to see what the rest of the term and year bring! It has been wonderful to see so many happy faces at school, and hear about everyone’s holidays.
The students spent the first week working on a series of activities and learning opportunities to jump start our school year while focusing on our school and classroom culture. We centred our learning around the 7 Habits and how we can become leaders at school and at home. All members of 5/6 agreed upon building our classroom cultures around the principle of respect and the many ways we can effectively show it. Especially through the language we use to our peers, the way we treat the physical environment around us and showing respect to ourselves. Each class has created their classroom mission statement, classroom W.I.G.S (Widely Important Goals) as well as their personalised mission statement and W.I.G. The activities the students participated in saw them engage in classroom discussions, working collaboratively with their new classmates as well as working independently. Week 2 saw the start of our learning in all areas. Students dove straight into Literacy and numeracy and enjoyed the beginning of the new targeted learning approach. In literacy, the focus was on correct sentence construction and understanding the requirements of good writing. The students have started positively and are constructing a solid foundation to build upon as the weeks progress. The students also participated in a myriad of specialist activities including Art, P.E, Music and the newly added performing arts with great success. Lastly, the 5/6 cohort participated in interschool sport and had the first game in week 2. We are lucky enough to have the growing opportunity to play different sports including cricket, tennis, volleyball and tee-ball.
Looking forward in our learning:
Morpheme Magic:
The 5/6 students will be beginning the morpheme magic program in week 3 which is set to improve the student’s word knowledge. It will focus on breaking down different prefixes and suffixes and how this can change base meanings.
Literacy:
In literacy we are continuing to look at sentence structure and building our capacities to recognise what is needed in a complete sentence. In addition, students will hone their ability to recognise and target their writing to target audiences.
Maths:
In maths, students will continue to look at Place Value for the next two weeks. The students will undertake essential assessment and will be breaking into targeted maths groups to help them understand concepts that are at their level of understanding.
From the Students:
Hi, my name is Jaxon and I’m a leader in video games
Hi, my name is Sai and I’m a leader in martial arts
This week in literacy, we learnt about SAVED sentences. SAVED is an acronym which stands for Subject, Adjective, Verb, Express my idea, and Does my sentence make sense?
This week in maths, we discussed what we already know about decimals and place value. We learnt that when saying decimal numbers out loud, we use the word ‘and’ not ‘point’ and then we say tenths, hundredths or thousandths.
We have learnt that being in 5/6 is a big responsibility because we are leaders of the school and the younger students look up to us as role models.
Last week we had our first practice session for interschool sports. We are very excited for tomorrow’s first 2024 sports match against Southmoore.
Thank you for listening and have a fantastic weekend
