Spotlight on Students

Parliament and Civic Education Rebate (PACER)

Year 6 Students from our school will soon be undertaking an education tour of the national capital (Canberra camp). Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of education programs with a focus on Australia's history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

Cumberland Community Connection

On August 23rd, 2023, Dundas Public School student leadership team participated in Leadership Day event, held at Burnside Public School. The event is under the umbrella of the Cumberland Community Connection with local schools sharing hosting responsibilities. Cumberland High School works actively with nine of the surrounding local primary schools on a number of combined initiatives designed to enhance students’ learning experiences and grow the connectedness of the entire school community.

This event provided an enrichment opportunity for the student leaders in the primary schools, led by the senior student leaders from Cumberland High School. The aim of this day is to enhance the connection between student leaders in our community and further enhance their leadership skills through collaborative challenges. Fostering young leaders in primary transitioning to leadership roles in High School.

The leaders enjoyed a wonderful day of activities, collaboration with peers across multiple schools and even managed to take a photo with two ex-Dundas students from Cumberland High School’s Leadership team.

The Anxiety Project

The Anxiety Project is a project designed by psychologist, Michael Hawton, and the NSW Primary Principals’ Association to assist primary students to manage their anxious behaviour. Michael Hawton is also the founder of Parentshop, providing education and resources for parents/carers and industry professionals working with children. This article is the first of a series of six articles, aimed to provide parents/carers with information and strategies to support their children.

Premier’s Debating Challenge

The Premier’s Debating Challenge for 2023 has come to an end. Our Year 6 team and our Year 5 team both won 2 of their 4 debates and showed a significant level of improvement over the year. I encourage our Year 6 team to continue their debating journey in High School, as it is a great skill to have and a wonderful way to make new friends!

I'm also very pleased to announce that Zakariah A from Dundas PS was successful in gaining a place on the Western Sydney Regional Debating Team and will be taking part in the NSW State Championships! Congratulations to Ayesha R for also participating in the regional trials. Both Zak and Ayesha did a great job impressing a panel of adjudicators and were outstanding representatives of our school.
