T3 2023

The Arts Term 3, 2023

This term, students are involved in learning the valuable art form of Music. The ice cream sundae image above shows the skills and abilities students will be developing in lessons.

Castle classes and Holly Year 2/3 classes

Students have been participating in a unit of work entitled “What’s in Your Lunchbox?” They have been learning the lunchbox song and have been playing different rhythms using the names of foods on non -melodic percussion (hand drums, triangles, shakers, etc). We are now introducing ostinatos ( continually repeated phrases) and playing notes on the xylophones to create a band performance. In small groups, students will compose a section of the performance using the knowledge and skills they have learned. Classes have also joined in online exercises such as Deteggtive Andersen, Funky Veggies and Bouncing Ball Beat. to help their understanding of beat and rhythm.

Holly Year 3/4 and Stillwell classes

What do pear, apple, orange and watermelon have to do with Music? Just ask our Middle/Upper Primary students and you will find that these fruit names are helping them to discover rhythm syllable systems - ta, ti ti and tika tika. Through listening games, group composition activities, online beat/rhythm play along tasks and percussion instrument playing, students are learning to read , recognise and write basic music notation. Later this term, students will undertake the Masterchef project where they will compose and perform a short piece using food words to demonstrate their understanding of these concepts.

JAM Band

On Friday, September 8, we are fortunate to be having the JAM band visit our school for a musical performance. The JAM Band is a group of passionate Adelaide musicians who provide a fun, entertaining, interactive and educational children's show. A few selected students from most classes will be involved in some of the songs in the show. The songs you have been hearing at pick up and drop off times this term are included in the  JAM band show.

Choir

Our choir members together with myself and Miss Hay continue to meet on Thursdays for a 50 minute session to learn a total of 13 songs which will be performed at the Southern Metropolitan Music Festival in early November at the Hopgood Theatre. Some songs are challenging, some have choreography and many have soprano and alto parts so we are extremely busy! If you are a parent or caregiver of a choir member, please praise them for committing to Choir and encourage them to learn their songs (particularly the ones that have soprano or alto parts) on the app at home. All songs need to be learned off by heart by the end of this term before our first rehearsal on Friday, October 20 (Term 4, Week 1).

Solo Club meets every Thursday lunchtime for interested students to practise solo parts in some of the songs. The following students have been selected to audition for parts at the Hopgood Theatre concert. They are: Lily Knight, Lily Hay, Lily Robbins and Lola Beens. We wish them good luck for their auditions in Week 8 this term.

Special mention also goes to Milly White, Alexis Schluter, Max Lindner, Clare Skelding, Aaliyah Parsons and Lola Beens who have entered their artwork into the Choir certificate competition to be judged later this week.
