Sustainability Team News

The sustainability team have been discussing ways that we can reduce our environmental impacts at Billanook, and a major issue is the amount of waste that is coming to school and being left out in the yard. To combat this, the sustainability team has launched a rubbish-free lunch competition school wide!
We are encouraging students to bring rubbish-free lunches to school. This will be checked on a random day each week by one of the class representatives. The class with the most amount of rubbish-free lunches by the end of term will win a prize!
We understand that this is not always easy, and encourage families to have a go and just do the best they can! Here are some tips and inspiration into how you can help your student bring a rubbish-free lunch to school:
- Use mini containers and compartment lunch boxes (small hands can help pack their own lunches!).
- Buy snacks in bulk like unsweetened yogurt, hummus, cheese or crackers, and dispense into small reusable containers as required.
- Choose fruits and vegetables which come wrapped in their own ‘natural packaging’, such as tomatoes, snow peas, oranges, bananas, baby cucumbers and beans.
- Wrap sandwiches in a cloth napkin, reusable beeswax wrap or a brown paper bag.
