Science Week
Week 4 this term was Science Week.
The theme for 2023 was ‘Innovation: Powering Future Industries’ with a focus on artificial intelligence. Students participated in a range of activities in Care Groups and Villages, including a Kahoot which Mawson won, beating Heysen by only 2 points!
Year 9 students participated in a Drone workshop, while Year 11 Psychology students visited the historic Z-Ward at Glenside Hospital.
The week culminated in a special Science Assembly, led by Mrs Hearn and the Year 12 Chemistry class, as well as the annual Science Week morning tea for staff.
It was a fun-filled week celebrating our love of all things science.

Year 7 English Incursion
On Friday 18th August the entire Year 7 cohort attended an incursion that gave them a deeper understanding of the novel study, 'You Don’t Know What War Is' by Yeva Skalietska.
The students and teachers heard from our guest speaker, Aliona, who is the President of the SLAVA Ukrainian Cultural Centre in Adelaide. She gave us all a deep insight into the experiences of a Ukrainian refugee, how Ukrainians have settled into Australia, and what services the Cultural Centre provides to help refugees. We were also treated to some traditional circle dance lessons from two Ukrainian dancers!
This was a fantastic experience for the Year 7s as we were able to gain a deeper insight into this ongoing situation. We also learned about how we could support Ukrainian refugees in Adelaide and beyond which assists in us learning to be globally aware and change makers, which are two key characteristics within our vision for learners.
We are very grateful for Aliona for taking time out of her work schedule to travel us and provide insight into the complex realities behind our novel study.

World of Mathematics Incursion
On Wednesday 23 August, the Year 7 students experienced the World of Mathematics incursion. This is an engaging, hands-on, interactive workshop.
It offered an ideal opportunity for the students to see how mathematics is applied to everyday life situations. The students engaged with all the activities while exploring Mathematics in a hands-on environment. The students were encouraged to communicate their Mathematical ideas, work together to solve problems, and use their skills to answer puzzles in small teams.
This highly engaging session showed how important Mathematics is and how it is everywhere. Overall, the most important aspect of this workshop is that it showcased how much fun Mathematics can be.

Paul Dillon
On 16 August 2023 we welcomed Paul Dillon back to Endeavour College to speak to our Senior Years students. Over the last 14 years, Paul has presented his alcohol and drug information sessions to our Year 10, 11 and 12 students each year, providing a key part of our approach to education on this important topic. Paul was warmly received by our senior students who engaged strongly with his presentation style and messages. In each year level session he shared data around alcohol and drug use amongst young people, debunked myths, talked about risks, exposed realities, explained legalities and provided safety strategies to help students make informed decisions, stay safe, and keep their friends safe.
As the only school in our local area to host Paul Dillon, we encourage our senior students to share what they have learnt with their peers in the broader community, and to also have conversations at home with parents and caregivers about alcohol and drug use. To support further helpful conversations about alcohol and other drugs Paul Dillon has a great range of resources for young people and families, including his popular podcasts (one for young people, and another one for parents), available online. Further information can be found on his website at: Podcasts - DARTA
We are very grateful to the LESNW for their generous support with Paul’s travel expenses, and our ongoing collaboration with the Lutheran School Counsellors Network, who collaborate to bring Paul to Endeavour and other Lutheran schools in South Australia each year. In previous correspondence sent to parents and caregivers in regard to Paul’s sessions we had indicated there would be a fee charged to senior student accounts for attendance at this incursion. However, this is not the case, and there will be no cost to families for Paul Dillon’s session this year.
We look forward to welcoming Paul back to Endeavour again in 2024!

Poppy and Pear Business Studies Incursion
The Year 11 Business Innovation Students had an insightful time with guest speaker Elly Domin, who owns event styling company Poppy and Pear as well as some other art-based businesses. Elly did not hold back in sharing her exciting yet tumultuous journey, especially her experiences through the COVID-19 pandemic where she had to pivot and diversify her businesses to stay afloat.
The students really connected with her and were truly inquisitive in seeking her business advice and determining how they could use what they learned in future business ventures.
Some of the students’ comments were as follows:
“I was able to learn about the realistic side of running multiple businesses.”
“Ellie was amazing in her delivery and provided much insightful information that I know, I will take away with me and apply to both my studies and future career ambitions!”

Connected Schools Worship
This week approximately 640 Connected Schools students from St Paul, Good Shepherd Para Vista, Golden Grove Lutheran and Endeavour College gathered in worship under the theme Better Together.
Through songs and music, actions, performances, and Bible readings, students from Years 4, 5, 6 and 7 explored how we are Better Together when we care, share, and support one another.
We were also fortunate to have a group of Year 9s and Celia Fielke from Australian Lutheran World Service, an overseas aid and development agency of the Lutheran Church of Australia, spoke to us about the importance of community supporting people in need.
We also got to view the striking Beehive artworks by Year 4s who created these during the Connected Schools Art and Technology Workshops last term.
Bees are the epitome of how working together is for the benefit of all.
Following the worship, everyone got to enjoy morning tea before returning back to school. We were blown away by the choir, band, performances, and energy amongst all who took part. A special thank you to all staff and students who made the day a reality and a special mention to our very own Youth Worker, Eve, who pulled the whole worship together.
