Learning Centre News...

Learning Centre One

How is it that we are already approaching the end of Term 3?! The last couple weeks have been eventful as we celebrated book week, Feast Day, prepared for Father’s/special persons day this Sunday and as we get ready for our first excursion to the Zoo on Thursday the 14th of September.

During Literacy, the students in phonics have been recapping on a range of sounds QU, CH, SH, TH, NG, AI, EE, IGH and OA. It has been great seeing the students' phonics knowledge and understanding grow as the term has progressed. Students in reading explored a range of activities and looked at the themes of texts, what a synonym is and the difference between a non - fiction text and fiction. The students then looked deeper into how words and images provide more detail for the reader and create meaning in the text. In writing the students explored ways to write a detailed sentence and how we can use adjectives and noun groups in our writing to add more meaning.

Throughout Maths, the students have been exploring location and transformation. They created a treasure map and how they can add detail to their maps. They then looked at how they can use the bee - bots and program them to go around a course. The students then looked at number sequences and how they can count from any starting point.

In Religion, the students have been looking at Mary as the mother and how Mary is an example of discipleship. They then look at the school song and unpacked it and how this connects to our faith community at OLSC. We also looked deeper into Mary as we prepared for our Feast Day.

During book week we celebrated the shortlisted texts and dressed up as our favourite book characters. We got to also spend some time with our buddies by having some snacks together in the hall. It was exciting seeing the students interact with one another and seeing the senior students being role models to the preps.

Learning Centre Two

We hope all fathers and the other significant males in our lives have a wonderful Father's Day this weekend. We thank them for their continued love and support!

BOOK WEEK

Last week, the students and staff came to school in costume for the annual Book Week parade. It was wonderful seeing all of the creative costumes worn by the children and a great day was had by all! The LC2 staff chose to acknowledge the theme of Book Week 2023 which was 'Read, Grow, Inspire'.

Congratulations to Zarnah, Grace and Ava who all won the awards for most creative costumes in 5/6.

LITERACY

Last week, Lisa's class enjoyed listening to one of the Book Week books, 'Dirt by Sea' by Michael Wagner. They used the comic strip layout of this book as inspiration to create their own comics about one of their own family road trips.

Chelsea's class have been learning about persuasive techniques by reading the book 'Let's Save the Great Barrier Reef' by Catherine Barr. In small groups, they annotated the pages from the book based on the vocabulary used and the information given.

NUMERACY

In maths lessons, we have been investigating and exploring the vocabulary related to data and graphing. Students have been looking at a range of graphs to analyse and some groups even created human pie charts.

LSO Appreciation Week

This week we celebrated our amazing Learning Support staff. We are always truly grateful for their support and consider ourselves extremely lucky to have them as a part of our team.

To Cheryl, Danielle, Anna, Isaac and Selena - We thank you and appreciate you all!

RELIGION

Today was our school's Feast Day and because of this, the 5/6 students have been exploring how Mary plays an important part in our lives, the lives of others and within the Catholic faith. They have created some lovely artworks of Mary in response to these lessons.

Learning Centre Three

Welcome to another eventful and engaging fortnight of learning in LC3, as we hit the final bend of term 3. The students have participated in several enriching learning activities across the past week. A special mention in honour of all fathers and significant males, hoping that they have a wonderful day celebrating on Sunday. Students enjoyed their morning tea and assembly to celebrate all fathers and significant males in their lives.

In literacy, we celebrated Book Week through the theme of “Read, Grow, Inspire“ exploring a range of texts that saw students complete various tasks from craft to creative writing that sparked much curiosity and imagination. In honour of the  Book Week parade we dressed up as our favourite book characters, our teachers even dressed up as characters from Snow White and the seven dwarfs.

In Maths, we have been working on our understanding of multiplication, through skip counting and learning all about arrays. We activated our prior knowledge by identifying where we can see arrays out in the real world, then created arrays in different ways using hands-on materials and drawing them in our books to show our mathematical thinking. We even created an “array city” with each building representing an array.

Our learning in inquiry this week had us finishing our Dioramas ready for our Learning Expo at the end of term. We researched our chosen animal and wrote a plan of all the things the animal would need to survive in their natural habitat, through this, we were able to create our diorama using a range of different materials from leaves, sticks and clay to recycled paper.

Religion has seen us learn all about Mary in preparation for our feast day celebration. We have been learning all about the feast of annunciation and the important role Mary plays. We also discussed Mary’s attributes and how they remind us of the special women in our lives.

A few important things to remember:

  • Feast Day, Friday 1st September
  • Learning Expo, Friday 15th September, 9am
  • First Day Term 4, Monday 4th October

Year 1/2 Team - Alison, Bianca, Janeen, Jannine, Jess, Jordan, Marilyn, Shalome, Tasmin,  Sue and Sarena.

Learning Centre Four

Mushrooms

This term in LC4 we have been growing mushrooms. It was a very slow start, however they have very rapidly grown and we are all amazed at how large they can get! It has been interesting learning more about mushrooms and other fungi!

Book Week

Thetheme for Book Week 2023 was 'Read, Grow, Inspire

Last week we celebrated our love of reading by reading some texts chosen this year for book week and completed a range of activities. In year 3/4 we chose to read the books:

  • Bev and Kev
  • Frank’s Red Hat
  • Market Day
  • Australia from Dawn to Dusk
  • Tiny Wonders
  • Jigsaw- A puzzle in the post

The students took part in creating a range of artwork that has not made a classroom display for most classrooms. Overall the students had a great time partaking in their learning activities, the book parade and attending the book fair.

Maths:

This week we moved on from learning about money to learning about time. Students have so far learnt what o’clock, half past and quarter past/to is equivalent in minutes and have learnt the difference between am and pm. They have used both analogue and digital clocks to display time.

Religion:

This fortnight we began learning about the relationship between Mary and Jesus. We explored the scripture of the Wedding of Cana and participated in some reflective thinking activities and godly play. The students have starting thinking about how Mary and Jesus can be considered as role models to us in our lives and how our relationships with other people can get like that of Mary and Jesus.

Inquiry:

The students have busily been working on areas of their inquiry project that will be displayed on their tables in the learning expo. This fortnight they have been working on creating labeled diagrams and beginning to research a range of facts and images that will be used in their project.
