What's happening in our classrooms?

Literacy:

For the past 2 weeks the Grade 5’s have begun learning about Fables with a focus on identifying the key features and the structure of Fable texts. They enjoyed reading different fables and discovering the moral and life lesson in each. In Reading, students learnt about Synthesising. Synthesising helps us gain a deeper understanding of the texts we are reading and often our ideas and understanding of texts change before, during and after reading. In Writing, Students began creating their own fable texts ensuring they followed the correct feature and structures.

Numeracy:

This week we continued learning about division; including solving multi-step worded problems. Students were encouraged to use a variety of strategies to solve problems ensuring they show their working out. We also learnt about fact families and the link between multiplication and division and addition and subtraction and how this can assist in solving problems. For example, if we know 5x4=20 we also know that 4x5=20, 20÷4=5 and 20÷5=4. This term, we have taught students a variety of quick, fun Maths games to consolidate their knowledge of timetables, such as Multo, Flip game, 3 in a row and Salute. These have been thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Inquiry:

In Inquiry, students began working collaboratively to create a presentation on their learning about the Solar System. Students have been encouraged to show their learning in a unique way such as in the form of a PowerPoint, video, 3D model, booklet, poster, etc. We have been very impressed with their Inquiry questions and how they are going to present their work. We cant wait to see their presentations!

Wellbeing:

This week is National Action Against Bullying Day. Our Wellbeing focus this week is around working together to implement positive and proactive solutions to prevent and address bullying. Students will also continue working on the Zones of Regulation and recognising that zones fluctuate throughout the day but for optimal learning the Green Zone is required to be most successful.

Maths Games in Action:

Here are some photos of a new Maths game in action we have been playing recently. The game is called '3 in a row' and focuses on improving multiplication and division skills. We have linked a video below for families to watch so you can play together at home!

Carrum Downs Secondary College Visit

Last week on Wednesday the 9th of August our Year 5/6 students visited Carrum Downs Secondary College to get a taste of high school life. Our students participated in various subjects such as PE, Drama, Humanities and STEM which were led by Year 7 teachers. Overall it was a terrific day enjoyed by all.

Science Fair - Open Afternoon

Thank you to all the friends and families that joined us recently for our Science Fair open afternoon. We were so excited to welcome so many people into our classrooms to share in the learning of our students. On the day we created posters to replicate the planets and their order from the sun.
