Secondary

Dear Families
Grounded in Ignatian spirituality and Jesus’ role modelling of servant leadership, the Year 11 leadership process ‘Id Quad Volo’: that which I desire, provides all Year 11 students the opportunity to transition into Year 12 as leaders of the student body who role model humility, hope, authenticity, purpose and are committed to responding to the needs of the world around them. For those aspiring for appointment to the Student Representative Council in 2024, this week saw the commencement of interviews with staff leaders and will continue with speeches for College Captains and House Captains in the coming weeks. Sixty five candidates have nominated for a formal leadership role next year, and all are to be congratulated on their passion, commitment and courage to contribute to College life through leadership in 2024. In previous years, College Captain nominees have addressed their Year 11 peers prior to the cohort voting for their preferred candidate. This year, to broaden student participation in the election process, College Captain speeches will take place at next week’s Secondary Assembly for students in Years 7 to 12 to hear. Candidates will respond to the following statement: What does it mean to be a leader following in the Ignatian tradition? Students in Years 10 to 12 will vote for their preferred candidate on Friday. House Captain speeches and voting will occur in Week 7 following the same process as previous years. We wish all candidates the very best for the coming weeks ahead. May you heed the words of St Ignatius of Loyola:
Teach us, Good Lord, to give and not count the cost; to fight and not to heed the wounds; to toil and not to seek for rest; to labour and not to ask for any reward save that of knowing that we do thy will.
We’ve experienced great success across numerous competitions in recent weeks! Congratulations to the following students for their outstanding achievements:
Yvie Rigg (Year 12) | Winner of Speak for Faith public speaking competition |
Elizabeth Newton (Year 12) | Winner of Fra Angelico Award, Angelico Arts Awards and Exhibition |

An evening with the US Consul General
Last night, a select group of Politics and Law ATAR students attended a talk at the WA State Library with Ms Siriana Nair, the Consul General of the U.S. Consulate in Perth. Ms Nair discussed contemporary issues relevant to the ATAR course, including the US Supreme Court's role, the Congress's composition, democratic principles, and electoral politics in the United States. Suffice to say the Q&A portion of the talk was stimulating. Ms Nair is a career Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State. Before her assignment in Australia, she served as the Deputy Political Counselor at the U.S. Mission in Brazil, advancing bilateral geopolitical objectives during a transformation in Brazil’s foreign policy. She has also served as Acting Political Counselor at the U.S. Mission in Jakarta, Indonesia, overseeing U.S. engagement in a broad range of areas, including democracy and human rights, military and security cooperation, and the South China Sea. It was a very informative, engaging evening and an excellent way for our students to extend their learning beyond the classroom.

Angelico Exhibition Awards
The Angelico Exhibition is a prestigious annual Catholic school art calendar event. The Angelico Exhibition is named after Blessed Fra Angelico, Patron before God of Artists.
The College has eight students work on display and took out some prestigious awards at the recent awards ceremony.
Congratulations to Year 12 student Elizabeth Newton, who was awarded second prize in the General Exhibition category and the overall winner of the Fra Angelico Award for 2023. Fra Angelico, a 15th-century Dominican Friar, is known as the Patron before God of Artists. The Fra Angelico Award is the most prestigious award for the exhibition.
We also congratulate Year 11 student Bella Samson for being presented with the Caritas Award. The Caritas Australia Art Award criteria are for artwork that reflects the Caritas Focus for 2023, 'For All Future Generations'. The Caritas' guiding principles are Human Dignity, Preferential Option for the Poor, Solidarity, Subsidiarity and Stewardship of the Earth’s Resources.

The subject of my painting is my Nanna. This artwork pictures her seated under the stained glass in her Parish Church. Religion has been a central force throughout her life; my artwork pictures her in quiet contemplation of her devotion to her faith.

Year 9 Reflection Day
Year 9 students participated in a fulfilled Reflection Day on Wednesday, 17 August. Youth Mission Team Australia ran the day with the theme 'Self-Image'. The day focused on encouraging students to appreciate the gift of their uniqueness and recognise that they have profound dignity and value and that they can have an impact on how others perceive their value and dignity.
Student quotes:
It was a very fun day, and I enjoyed it a lot. It helped me think about my relationship with God.
The Reflection Day helped me better understand my perspective on God and my relationships with people.
The games were rather enjoyable, as were the skits. I enjoyed learning about how I see myself and how I see others.
It was a very meaningful and deep experience about the importance of self-image and self-esteem.

Science Week
The theme for national Science Week this year was ‘Innovation: Powering Future Industries’. John XXII College continues to support students' creativity and problem-solving skills through a range of enquiry-based programs in science. This week, students in Years 7 to 9 were tasked with various creative contests that included designing and building paper planes, helicopter pads and lighthouses from a range of recycled materials. Students also investigated future circuitry by designing models made from conductive playdoh.
On Wednesday we welcomed the WA Birds of Prey Centre for a display of local raptors, including boobook owls, brown falcons and a wedge-tail eagle. These animals have been injured and rehabilitated back to health and are now used to educate the public on the wonders of our local fauna.
On Thursday, students were tasked to complete a scavenger hunt around the College’s Jesuit Environmental Centre. Those successful were rewarded with the wonders of nitrogen cooled ice-cream. This freeze-drying technique continues to be used to preserve and create future food sources.
Students at John XXIII College are continually exposed to and challenged by the wonders of science. The valuable skills learnt through a range of programs on offer will equip students to become proficient innovators of the forthcoming generation.
