How the Seasons Influence Our Wellbeing
Have you ever noticed how the seasons can change the way you feel, think, or even move? Winter naturally encourages us to slow down. Shorter days, colder weather, and less sunlight can make us feel more tired, less motivated, or even a bit moody. And that’s completely normal, it’s your body and brain telling you it’s okay to pause, rest, and recharge. Think of winter as a season for self-care, reflection, and cozy moments.
Winter: A Time to Recharge
During winter, it’s okay to slow your pace. Maybe you’re less motivated to exercise, socialise, or get through your homework, and that’s fine. Use this time to focus on mental wellbeing:
Try indoor hobbies like reading, journaling, drawing, or cooking.
Plan small routines that give your day structure, like morning stretches or bedtime wind-downs.
Stay connected with friends online or through smaller gatherings when it’s cold outside.
Even though winter might feel slower, it’s important to keep moving in ways that suit you. Short walks, indoor exercises, or weekend hikes can help keep your energy and mood up. Remember: every small effort counts!
Spring and Summer: A Season to Bloom
As the days get longer and the air warms, your energy naturally rises. Spring and summer bring opportunities to reconnect with the world, enjoy outdoor activities, and recharge your social life. This is the time to step outside, get moving, and embrace the season’s energy.
Ideas for Staying Active and Having Fun
Sports and hobbies: Return to your favourite sport, try skateboarding, rollerblading, swimming, or even yoga outdoors.
Family and friends: Pool days, picnics, hikes, bike rides, or just chilling at local parks.
Explore Knox: Visit playgrounds and parks, splash around at WaterMarc or Knox Leisureworks, join library holiday programs, hike the Dandenong Ranges, or ride along the Blind Creek Trail. There’s something for everyone!
Mind and body: Outdoor activities aren’t just fun, they boost your mood, help your focus, and reduce stress.
Sun Safety and Balance
Summer is amazing, but it comes with responsibilities. Protecting your skin and body is key:
Apply sunscreen regularly, wear hats and sunglasses, and stay hydrated.
Seek shade during the hottest parts of the day.
Balance outdoor activity with rest, your body needs downtime too.
Tips to Keep Wellbeing on Track All Year
Mix indoor and outdoor activities: Adapt to the weather while keeping active.
Nourish your body: Healthy snacks and water fuel your energy for all activities.
Mindful moments: Use each season as a chance to reflect, reset, and set small goals. Journaling, meditation, or even mindful walks can help you tune into your wellbeing.
Celebrate your wins: Every step you take toward staying active, connected, or rested is important, notice and celebrate it!
Each season has its rhythm, and summer is all about growth, energy, and joy. Step outside, feel the sun, move your body, and enjoy the simple pleasures of being alive. Life is buzzing, make the most of it!
