Spotlight on Learning

Early Stage 1
Writing
This week in writing, we started using a writing checklist to make our writing even better. The checklist reminds students to use capital letters, punctuation, adjectives, finger spaces between words and other important things. Kindergarten students have been using the checklist to check their own work and fix any mistakes. This helps them learn how to improve their writing all by themselves. It’s wonderful to see the students taking pride in their writing and trying their best to make it clear and fun to read.
Numeracy
This week in maths, Kindergarten students explored the concept of area through fun, hands-on activities. Working in maths groups, some children designed and built their own houses using paddle pop sticks and then compared the areas of their houses with their friends. Other students got creative by building robots and calculated the area by adding the parts together, using the split strategy method they have been learning. It was wonderful to see the students actively engaged and applying their maths skills in imaginative ways.
Kindergarten had their first colour run this week, which was filled with lots of bright colours and joyful laughter. The students ran excitedly around the oval, smiling and having fun as vibrant colours were tossed in the air. It was a memorable day full of energy and happiness.

Stage 2
Year 3 have had a very busy start to Term 4: learning new concepts, engaging with different texts and of course, enjoying our sport and participating in the much-anticipated fun run!
In English, we have been reading Pip Harry’s ‘The Little Wave’, about a rural class of students that are brought to Manly to see the beach for the first time. We have been learning the features and structure of a persuasive text and have enjoyed practising our typing skills as we publish our work.
In maths, we have been consolidating our knowledge of multiplication and beginning to explore fractions, learning about concepts such as ‘numerator’, ‘denominator’ and ‘equivalent fractions’.
For art, we have been exploring the concept of perspective in our alpine artworks! We have also been enjoying preparing our class pages for the 60th anniversary of Roselea yearbook!
Please find below some recounts of our school fun run:
‘Yesterday we had a fun run. We had so much fun! We all got coloured- I think the parents are going to have a lot of washing. I think that we all loved the teachers getting slimed. And don’t forget the prizes, I wonder when they will arrive…’ Sharrvesh S, 3F
‘The Colour Run came yesterday to Roselea! We were so excited. 3F raised the most money and Arjun in 3F donated the most in the WHOLE school! We had lots of fun. My favourite part was getting coloured with my friends. I loved running with my friends and getting free ice blocks (with our parents’ permission)’ Alyssa D and Jocelyn Y, 3F.

Stage 3
Colour Fun Run
Term 4 has been full of excitement so far with our recent Colour Fun Run, organised by our dedicated P&C committee. Students had a fantastic time running and getting splashed with colourful powder, all thanks to the enthusiastic support of our parent volunteers.
Not only was it great fun for everyone involved, but the event also helped raise funds to support our school. We thank all the families who participated and contributed. We look forward to more fun community events like this in the future.
Footsteps Dance Program
This term, our Stage 3 students have started an exciting new dance program called Footsteps. Each week, a Footsteps dance instructor teaches the students a short, choreographed dance that they get to learn and enjoy together.
The Footsteps program links to the Creative Arts and PDHPE curriculum by promoting creativity and expression through dance, while also encouraging physical activity, coordination, and teamwork. These skills support students’ overall health and well-being, as well as their confidence and collaboration.
Many students are having lots of fun picking up the moves with enthusiasm. For our Year 6 students, this program offers a special opportunity — they will select one of the dances to perform at their Year 6 Farewell later this year.
While some students feel a bit shy at first, we hope they grow more confident and comfortable with each session. We look forward to seeing their progress and celebrating their performances at the end of the year.
Basketball Program
Alongside the Footsteps Dance Program, Stage 3 have been loving their new basketball program, organised by the Australian International Sports Organisation (AUSISO). An experienced sports coach from AUSISO leads the sessions and guides students through the basketball drills to develop their skills. Many students, who already love playing basketball outside of school, are excited to learn new drills and improve their skills in a fun and supportive environment. This program ties into the PDHPE curriculum by encouraging students to be active and healthy, develop confidence, and learn how to work well with others.
