Year 3/4 - Newsletter

Dear parents,
It’s hard to believe we are over halfway through Term 4!
What's happened in 3/4 this fortnight?
English – We have continued our Structured Literacy novel study using The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. In Morphology, we have focused on the suffix - age (meaning ‘state or condition’) and the suffix -or- (meaning ‘someone who’ or ‘someone that’). In Grammar, students have been learning about how to use adverbs of affirmation and temporal (time) connectives to strengthen their writing. Students have also been finalising planning and drafting their persuasive letter, convincing their parents either to get — or not get — a robot! Writing their second body and conclusion paragraphs this week.
Maths – Over the past fortnight, students have been learning all about angles and decimals. We began week 5 by exploring different types of angles, including right, acute, obtuse, reflex, straight and revolution angles. Students had opportunities to find angles around their classroom and then work with others to create fantastic angle art around the 3/4 area using chalk and masking tape - we were blown away by the end results! Students then moved on to representing fractions on number lines, counting by fractional parts, and recognising equivalent fractions in different forms. Building on this, they learned to place fractions and mixed numerals accurately on number lines, fill in missing fractions, and convert between improper fractions and mixed numerals.
This week we shifted our focus to decimals, beginning the week looking at what decimals are and how we write them. We then moved on to looking at decimal as tenths (o.1 = one tenth) and decimals as hundredths (0.01 = one hundredth) over the week. We then applied these understandings to write and order different decimals in groups and on a number line.
Inquiry - This fortnight in Inquiry, we investigated biomes around the world, learning about how plants and wildlife work together to create them. We also looked at some African animals and explored their diets and how they have adapted to survive in their unique environment.
Students should have now completed the first five components of their project (‘Starting out’, ‘Country Statistics’, ‘Culture’, ‘Characteristics’ and ‘Everyday life’). The ‘Presentation Preparation’ section is due to be returned to us by NEXT Friday 21st November. We are more than happy for homework to be completed BEFORE the assigned date. We encourage students to be up to date each week by following the checklist, ticking off as they go and having a parent/guardian site and sign their work each week.
Friendology/Wellbeing - This week we have continued Unit 7 of The Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships Curriculum, which is ‘Gender Norms and Stereotypes’. Our focus over weeks 5 & 6 have been looking at the following:
- Understanding and describing some rights and responsibilities that we might have in our life.
- Learning how we can show small acts of kindness everyday.
Also, during this term, we will be revisiting our lessons around coping with change, stress management, friendship skills and the importance of kindness.
Camp - We are deep into organising our camps. Please ensure you have completed and returned any medical forms. If you are in need of one, please contact your classroom teacher as any medication taken must be given/sighted by an adult. There will be spare forms available on the morning of camp.
Please note the ‘Year 3 Packing List’ is up on Compass, giving you plenty of time to get organised. The Year 4 Packing List will be uploaded shortly.
School Stationery - Your child's 2025 spare stationery has been sent home in preparation for 2026 Book Lists. We hope that this will assist you with the purchase, knowing what spares your child/children currently have.
Headphones - We have noticed a number of students do not have working headphones at school. Please check with your child to see if they need a new pair so they are ready for learning activities that require them.
